My Nikon D700 appears to be buggin' out on me. Random shots come out all black, yet shots right around the black shots are exposed perfectly. I look at the image data of the black shots and it says 1/8000 and F--. Same on all of them. I switched lenses, and same problem. It only happens about 5% of the time though.
I have 64,000 actuations on the body.
Anybody ever heard of this happening or have any idea what might be happening?

Your D700 should be far, far from crapping out, I am sure you know that.
This is what I did.
1. found an old crapped out SD card, of course you will need to do the same with a compact flash card, which should be easier. Anyway, I dipped a paper towel in some of Jennifer's fingernail polish remover (acetone), wrapped it around the card and jammed it in there to clean the contacts. Be careful to not leave a piece of paper towel behind in the slot.
2. I cleaned the lens contacts and the corresponding contacts on the the body lens mount.
3. Eventually reinstalled the firmware.
This was done on a D90 which is about the same generation as your D700. At the end of the day it worked. I will never know if it was the cleaning or firmware reinstall because I did too many things at the same time. In your case I would probably start with cleaning up the body lens contacts, because that is easy.
