Taking a 5 year old fishing.

I am taking my nieghbors 5 year old son fishing on Sat June 1. I want this to be a memorable first fishing trip. I was thinking 1000 Islands in Cocoa, Haulover. I have a boat. I would like to keep him catching so he won't get bored. Mangos, school trout. :huh Any ideas where I should take them.

1000 islands isint really a catch fest.. not for me anyway :grin when i take my son fishing (he's 9) he generally gets bored if theres not alot of action.. when we lived in melbourne i would take him to the eau gallie relief bridge and put him on those bluefish on a 4'6 ugly stik and a light reel.. he loved it.. the bluefish have however mostly passed.. if you can find birds hitting the surface you will most likely find ladyfish and jack, fast action.. you can find jacks and ladys at the PC lock fender too..

With a 5 year old (think short attention span)...make sure you bring plenty of snacks and juice boxes etc...

I would say generally...a fresh water local lake with worms and a bobber (kids love watching them.....) for bluegills is a better option.

Have lots of food and drinks on the boat. When all else fails, give him a snack. Go to someplace like Haulover and just soak baits. You should get some good action and he will enjoy whatever he catches.

If you can get outside the inlet at the port, turn left and run a half mile up the beach. The whiting bite is crazy and he will have a blast catching them. Pretty fast action and easy to do. Call if you need more info and we will help you out

If the bite is slow, put a few bait fish or shrimps in a bucket and let him play with the "little fishies" until you get a bite.

South of the locks at Port Canaveral, on the River side, close to the cement wall under the lock sentry's observation tower. That spot should keep him busy and entertained, if not you can land on an island and let him explore and play around..

    Have fun!

YES!! Young kids LOVE that!..... For many years my youngest daughters children called one of our local spoil islands " Grampas island" since we would always wind up there catching bait with the cast net ....Somehow, people got the wrong idea and thought that the childrens grandfather was some multi-millionair :rotflmao

Let them use your baitwell net to catch little crabs etc...and throw the cast net and let them see and handle the fish...It blows their little minds!

I have a five year old that I take out a lot. He doesn't really care what he catches as long as he's reeling something in. If it's slow I will cast the sabiki rod out and let him reel in pinfish or whatever else might be on there, and he loves that. He also likes playing with the shrimp in the livewell...whatever it takes to keep him interested. I do remind him often though that it's called fishing and not catching, and how great it is to be out on the water even if the fish aren't biting. Good luck.

letting them play with the shrimp is all well and good until they get a horn broken off in thier hand :grin

I have a five year old, we go fishing a lot in the backyard, and he's got about 15-20 minutes in him, tops.

Go get some frozen shrimp, peel and put a 'booger ball' on a small hook, and let him catch pinfish next to the boat ramp. Three or four fish and he'll be bored with fishing.

Then, as someone above suggested, take him for a boat ride and explore an island. Call it "Pirate Island." You'll make a friend for life :)

I have 3 grandkids age 4-7. They get bored quickly so you want to go where the actions is non-stop. I give them each a telescopic "cane" pole and a tiny hook and bobber. I like to find a dock that doesn't have a railing as it makes it impossible for the little ones to fish over the rail. Our favorite spot is JBs Fish camp. There's no one there in the mornings and they can pull in pinfish non-stop. They call them whoppers but actually they are perfect size for bait so we both make out.

I tried to take them out on the boat last week with spin casting outfits and we all were miserable. Next time we'll go back to JBs.

I have a 7 yr old and have been with several kids before. As mentioned several times, SNACKS AND DRINKS ARE THE KEY! My son enjoys fishing, but has more fun with the bait and bait net.

Isnt that area protected by the cape and Tiger Shoals?

Anyway, I love taking 5 year olds fishing... They make great bait.

But seriously. When my kids were little Id take them under the drawbridge going to the cruise ship terminals and they got a big kick out of the non-stop pinfish action.

Now they love going out on the OO to catch sharks in the summer.

I hope your tripe was successful. When I take kids that young out I usually stop at one of the sandbars in the river and use shrimp on a bobber for puffers. They bite like crazy and the kids get a kick out of them puffing up when you bring them on board and remove the hook. No spines and the rough skin is easy for the kids to hold when they release them and watch them deflate in the water. I consider these trips to be entertainment trips as much as fishing trips. Good luck
