New experience

Looking to tow over and fish the other coast, growing a lil bored with my coast an need some "strange" if you will lol I kid. but the theme here is something different, growing up in Homestead as a kid I fished a little but my father was limited by fear and size of boat so i didnt get to see the richness the Atl had to offer. Now as an ault with the right size boat Im looking to explore learn and catch. i would appreiate any pointers. i would love to land my 1st sail, dnt care how big it is... Ive only hooked one in my life. Just dont wana head over totally blind. tackle baits set ups etc.

Well...Your handle is "flatsrunna"......I am confused because you are talking about Dad being timid...and the richness of the Atlantic...and Sailfish...and having the right boat.

Are you wanting to target Sails from your skiff?

Sailcat? You will need to travel 20+ miles just to get to the sails. Does your boat have a range of 90 miles? Can your boat handle 3' seas @ 6sec? Do you have radio? tow insurance? .....

Iv caught sailfish in 40' of water just past monster hole. why would he have to go 20+?

For the same reason that I don't bass fish up the St. Sebastian...even though I've caught bass there...

If you are traveling to target a specie...you would *NOT* go to a low percentage place....

My son caught a sailfish in 45 feet of water in front of the Sebastian Beach inn...but it is NOT the sailfish grounds...neither is " just past monster hole "

yep.. you wanna put yourself in the best position possible, and in this case, it would prolly be 20 miles or more offshore.. why waste all that money, time, preperation for a shadow of a chance compared to the productive grounds

Anthony, I looked at your website...either of your boats are fine...
I would wait and fish the sailfish winter run since it is generally more predictable....the best action varies some...but Ft Pierce inlet south is best most of the time. Remember that the further south you go...the deeper water and gulfstream edge is closer...in some places VERY close to shore....just a few miles.

If you want to do summer sails...check in with the SE forum....deep water closer and more fish as a rule..hope this helps.

lol sorry for the confusion, I have a big enough boat, Id like to scratch a sail off the list but I just really wana get into a different fishery then Im used to. I will offer a free ride to someone with local knowledge. I love to bottom fish so just chasing sails isnt my thing.

Come over on the full moon...night fish for Snapper....then troll at dawn/early AM.....You get the best of both worlds...Awesome bottom all night and a shot at a Sail....and you're out fishing when the sun isn't frying your bacon!

trailer a little further south to st lucie inlet, ( Stuart ) catch some greenies off of the beach, usually some to the north off the beach or just se of the inlet on " bull shark " barge. take them out to the 65-80' reef to the ne of the inlet and slow troll them like you would for kings, you have a good shot at some sails that way. plus when your done fishing offshore anchor in the inlet and wear out the snook of the left over baits.
