My buddy Paul and I did a 24 hr iron man trip beginning Thursday morning and returning Friday morning. We sought out grouper by day and grovers by night. Ran north out of the port and loaded up on bait at 8a. Dropped 21 and 27 and caught red snapper. Lots of em. Got freight trained by a few large grouper, but didnt boat any. Put one 35 lb AJ on ice. Ran out deeper and dropped the cones. Nothing was home out deep. Baits were coming up cold and dead. Nice school of phin showed up boat side and we put a bunch on ice. Made our way to a wreck in 70 feet and got anchored up for the night. No luck with the grovers. Around 1 AM we made a run to some cheese in 62 feet. Pulled up more red snapper and 1 short gag. Im not exaggerating when I say we easily put 200 lbs of red snapper on the deck before release. Were the grovers home? Who knows. Couldn't get bait past the ARS. Bait didn't matter. Grunt chunks, squid, ballyhoo, sardines, and pinners were all inhaled by ARS. Sent down a few very large live grunts that I thought were to big for ARS. No sir. Large grunts = Large ARS. Cant wait for the mini season. Weather was great out there. Smooth sailing for most of the trip.
