Proposed 2013 Rocketman Florida Triathlon on Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Got this email from the MINWR and I'm wondering why MINWR management can't make a decision without seeking public review and comment.

So, someone wrote an 87 page dissertation to describe the potential impact of a one day bicycle event over the SR406 Causeway, down the SR402 to the North entrance of KSC, down to the VAB, out to and around a launch pad and back..... all on paved roads.

I say go for it. Those bicyclers probably pay taxes, let 'em ride.

    Main issues are:

    * roads will be closed for the day affecting 1000 to 2000 cars and visitors
    * concern for wildlife being disturbed by 1700 bicyclers.

A bike race involving 1,300-1,700 bicyclists traversing 6 miles of paved refuge roads over a 4-hour period could negatively impact wildlife, such as eastern indigo snakes and gopher tortoises, due to potential collisions with bicyclists resulting in wildlife injury and mortality.

Due to the high speed at which the race participants would be moving, participants concentrating on racing tactics instead of their surroundings, and the high number of bicyclists moving in both directions on the road, avoidance of wildlife on roads may be difficult.

And yet no concern for 1000 to 2000 cars per day?

Seems to me like the wildlife is getting a break that day.

I do triathlons and fish the wild life refuge, so care about both. The race would be great for the area and not do zero damage. Being such a flat course, there probably wouldn't even be road rash left on the course.
