Canon SX50?

I was at Ding Darling over the weekend and ran into Don Stokes, co-author with his wife of the Stokes Field Guides to Birding.

I have been looking for a good camera for wildlife photography, but I'm a novice so I don't want more than I can handle. The Stokes highly recommended the Canon SX50. They have the D Series Nikon with all the big lenses and have been really impressed with this Canon.

Anyone have any opinions or experience with this camera? Would I be better to spend a little more and get into the Rebel series?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
