    Spanish Mackrel

OK, I'm going to be one of those guys that isn't there but asks questions. I'm thinking about going gulf coastal, @ PSJ, in a week or two. Have y'all seen any spanish mackrell yet?

Will be looking for reds and trout this week end but if calm enough I may jump to the North end to check on that. Let you know if we get into anything

They always get crazy in the apalachee bay area sometime in March. Can't be too far off.

    Bakerman,

Sorry, I was not able to get to the North end to check. Sunday started off winding and slightly choppy and when it did calm down the wife had gotten a chill, so back to the landing we go. She was sortunate enough to get this in the South end of the bay though. It was 29" and about 9 lbs. I had 3 more of that caliber up to the boat just could not get them to bite. They would dang sure follow though.

Thanks for trying. I'll probably just go in a couple of weeks.

Good red though. I know the follow to the boat thing. I've brought the whole school to the boat following a spoon but none of them were eating. Kind of like they just wanted a leader.

Folks caught them here all winter this year. First I've ever heard of it, but I saw it first hand. Mind you, over the years I've accidently caught a few off the bottom in deep water in the bay while bait fishing, but never in great numbers. This year, folks were trolling them up all winter just like spring / fall movement. Seems to me that many of the spanish just stayed here.

Pretty sure we can all count on a crappy ling season. So much for the second station going on top of my boat. Although these last couple cold snaps might keep the gulf bait away a bit longer.

    We'll see!

Anyway... to answer your question... I would imagine that if you hvae a two or three hot days in a row, you can catch hyou some over there. Folks here were loading coolers in Jan only a few feet below the surface.
