    Trout Counted Today

Barry invited me out to go fishing on his boat today. I was game so we met up at the Crisp Park boat ramp around 10am. Barry has a nice boat just shy of 13' long. It is a Malibu with a great layout on it and has so much potential to be a sweet little skff. With a 25 on the back, it really scooted. Anyway, the plan was to work some docks in the St. Pete Canals and head out to WI when the tide came in.

Just a quick report on how we did. I didn't do my normal tracking of the fishing like I normally do. I regret that now. We worked a few docks and the islands near the canal that takes you to Weedon but had no luck. We went through the canal and stopped on occasion to work docks, but no luck. I did see some sheepshead sitting next to dock posts going through.

We made it out to WI and worked the west side for a while. No action and very little activity. Out to the front and I catch a lady fish on the spook. Nothing there so we headed over near the channel to work some more docks. Barry caught about a 10" flounder on a shrimp near a dock. Then he caught a good sheepshead near another dock.
He flipped in with another shrimp and caught his little brother. Nothing to speak of so far so we headed back over to WI to work the western back side of it. Some fish activity but we caught no fish. By now it is almost 3pm and we have very little to show for our efforts.

We made a move over to Christmas Pass on the east side of WI. I have always had luck there, being that I had been there all of two other times. On the way we stopped and threw and Barry caught a decent trout on a shrimp. We were now at the mouth and the mullet activity was incredible. The tide was flowing out a bit when we got there. I started throw a 3" mullet in smoke/gold halo and within a few casts caught a nice upper slot trout that crushed my jig. We fished that area for about two hours and I ended up catching about 6 trout. All were very nice size and between 17 and 19". I did catch one on the spook and had a few strikes but misses. Also, a nice little red of maybe 20" showed up for my party. Barry caught another trout on a shrimp I believe and then he started catching them on the jig. He ended up catching 4 or 5 nice trout also.

It was getting late and we had a little ways to get back to the ramp so we left them biting. Speaking of biting, I don't know what these insects were but they descended upon us and were eating us alive. They weren't mosquitoes and they weren't noseeums. They would bite you and then seemed to burrow down into your skin. They had wings on them. It was brutally hot. i was sweating like a pig. There was no wind and then we got attacked by these bugs from hell. I got bitten through my shirt they were so bad. The grass was pretty bad for a while over there too, but it got better later in the day.

Other than that, we ended up having a decent day and probably could have done better if we had gotten over there sooner. I sure was happy to catch those trout today. The trout there always seem to be good quality trout. It was a lot of fun Barry and thanks for taking me out on your sweet boat. Look forward to fishing with you again some time.

    I 2x this for real.

Good job guys, I usually don't really care to fish for trout much, however, I do
Like to take advantage of what each season has to offer. Winter, real trout are here. Growing up on st Joseph sound, I got sick of catching f trout by about age 10, lol. But big trout, that's a little diff.
    Catch 'em and Release 'em!

Good work Bassin- didn't see ya, but glad you found some fish!

Agree about this weather. It seems even some of the snook are poking their heads back out a bit with the warm weather- saw a few monsters on a flat yesterday. No dramatic weather change in sight right now, so hopefully when it does cool back down a bit it will be a slow process so they can run for cover.

Enjoyed the day a lot, Dave (except for those stupid insects!). Thanks for taking over the helm.....I learned a lot from you. :-)

Tarpontine.....were you fishing with another yakker on the inside of Weedon in the afternoon? We saw two kayaks and thought it might be you.

No I was actually in the boat I guide out of yesterday- Scout 240 tower boat. Dave said he thinks I went past you guys on my way towards the back of weedon to go snook hunting after we got some big reds and 20" trout.

Good work yesterday- sounds like you and Dave made a day of it at the end!
