Mayport jetties with a quick trip into the navy basin.

Well it was foggy this morning fished the north jetties & south jetties.
    1 stone crab & 4 sheephead.
Fiddlers & live shrimp for bait
Slow day by noon the fig was so thick you couldn't see the freighters agreeing the jetties.
Well we headed back in following the south rocks I thought we were getting close to the basin so I turned slightly north went for awhile threw the 15 fit vis I noticed what I thought was a pilot boat so I headed back south towards shore next thing I know I passed what I thought was the fuel dock but then saws bunch of poles sticking out of the water it just didn't look quite right. There was a creek going of to the right looked like the cutjust past three shrimp boats. I thought well some how I missed Ted Mayport boat ramp. All of a sudden directly of the bow was a huge shop with a huge gun on the front. Well I turned around & headed back out turns out I was in the navy basin the sea gate was open. As we were leaving there was a guy in a Carolina skiff headed in I told him where we were & he headed back out a well. Glad we didn't get shot wish I had gotten a pic it was awesome to be that close.

I had a similar experience years ago before GPS equipment on the boat. Got to the end of the jetties and said the heck with this. Tried following the jetties back but lost visual contact. Freighter horns seemed to be all around me. Finally recognized the basin and hugged the shore back to the ramp. I look back on it and laugh--a little. Pretty dang spooky when you're out there in it.

If you do any boating at night, or fowl weather, it could save your life. GPS IS A GOOD INVESTMENT TO HAVE ON A BOAT.

Last year while fishing with Beau Baker, We where 50 plus miles offshore and the fog rolled in this thick if not thicker. We decided to head in about 5:30 PM. We got to Mayport ramp at 2 AM. Thank GOD he had a handheld GPS as his primary quit working. He JUST installed radar the night before. Installed as in using straps to hold it onto the hard top.

This was probably the most I have been "scared" on a boat in my life. Not being able to see the can's coming into the jetties was VERY strange. Literally, the radar said the can was there and we could not see it until it was 3 feet from the side of the boat. Beau did a great job (very slowly) getting us home safe and allowing him to weigh in for the NE FL Wahoo Challenge the next day!!

When I finally got in touch with my wife, she had already been on the phone with the police and the coast guard. I have not been back out with Beau since and NOT because the wife tells me no! lol

I want to ride on that new Yellowfin beau!! She gave me permission!!

I have GPS & radar on my boat he has GPS on his boat but turns out he doesn't keep it on the boat & mainly uses it on his offshore boat. I'mjust glad they didn't know we wetter there & didn't shoot us.
