I hope every body had a great holidays! I got to eat a lot and spend almost every day on the water. The conditions have been hit are miss with the weather but we prevailed against mother nature, catching fish on the good days as well as the bad.
The fish have been all over the place. You just have to get out there and find them. The trout have been really shallow and spooky on the flats but there are some big ones out there if you can entice them into eating. I saw one the other day in less than a foot of water that was well over 30". He didn't get that big by being big a dumb. Needless to stay he's still swimming around out there some where. Most of the trout we did catch on the flats where in the 17" to 20" range, sight fishing with a soft plastic are live shrimp rigged weedless. The slot reds are mixed in the same area's they have been all bunched up together. We have been catching them with the same approach and rigs. These fish have been lower slot 18" to 22"
As far as the bay its been hit are miss we have caught a lot of black rock bass every trip out mostly little ones with some keepers mixed in and the biggest running 17". Kids love keeping a bend in the rod! I feel thats what matters most to are younger anglers is catching fish. Fishing The passes has also been good at times. We have pulled some really nice over slot reds over the holidays using live shrimp on the bottom. These big guys are so much fun on light tackle, I had a 9 year old catch a 36" Pig on 10 pound braid. The day before that I had a 12 year old catch the biggest red we have caught all season 43 inches. He's hooked for life after a fish like that!
When the weathers been bad I have been fishing up the rivers and its been non stop action. Trout , reds, and sheepshead. We have been catching limits of trout and reds no monsters though. Most of the trout have been running 14" to 16" and the reds" 17" to 22". We have had to weed through a good deal of almost legal fish to fill the cooler but my guest have had a great time doing it. The sheepshead have been on fire at times although I've only been catching little ones. We sat on a hole of mine thats usually is awesome for trout and reds. We released at least 30 undersized sheepies, I have never seen those finicky suckers eat like that. Come to think of it I did have a client on the boat that from what his friend said had a luck horse shoe up his azz. When he caught two rock bass on one hook. I about fell off the boat I was laughing so hard. It's times like that that you don't forget and reminds you how lucky you are to be sharing the moment with them. Don't let life pass you by and fish every day you can. The memories will live on forever. Tell next time, keep your rod bent and your drag screaming!
I would like to thank are newest sponsors for 2013 A.L.X Rods, Reel Life Apparel, And Slayer Inc. Its going to be a great year! You guys check out there links below they all have some awesome products that catch fish and keep you looking good while your doing it.
