    PC 1/2/13 - 8a Kingfish

Left Bluepoints around 9am - turned on the VHF and heard a bit of a disgruntled exchange between an uninformed boater and a Lock contractor. -- " In other words - what you are saying - is I can't go fishing today ? " -- Lock operator : " There has been ample notifications - the locks are closed Mon to Fri ---- " Oh well -- Got to 8a about 10 am - put out freezer burned ballyhoos - My first mate and I didn't slay the Kings - but they were definately there ! Despite some light drags on some new gear - we only boated 4 kings out 10 good hits. After useing up the old baits - switched to frozen mullets I netted a couple months ago - only had one bite on them - so we had enough fish and were on our way in by 1 pm.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District has announced changes in operations at Canaveral Lock to accommodate repairs over the next six months.

Effective December 10, the lock will operate on the following schedule during weekdays:

    · 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Lock open, one lockage in each direction

    · 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lock closed for repair work

    · 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Lock open, lockages as needed

The lock will continue its normal operating schedule on weekends, from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The change in operating hours will be in effect until the work is complete, currently estimated to be the summer of 2013. Additionally, vessels that require more than 45 feet of horizontal clearance will need to coordinate passage through the lock at least seven days in advance by contacting the Canaveral Lock at (321) 783-5421

wow, it seems like they are always working on those locks. Wish they would just remove and save us some tax payers money and give us open access to the ocean.

I believe I heard the lock guy on the radio say -- There has been ample notifications - that the lock is closed from Monday through Friday --- I'm NOT sure what hours he said -- maybe from 6 am till 6 pm --- If you need to use the locks -- best you find out ! ---- That conversation I overheard on the VHF radio -- started off with something like : ( from the boater ) " I see there is a barge / crane inside the locks - when abouts can I get through !? " -- He could NOT get through to go fishing !
