The forecast looked good according to NOAA (1-2') and Wind Guru, however the Middle Grounds weather buoy was recording 3 1/2' waves. Decided to make the 90 mile run anyway and started out in flat seas, but as we learned buoy data trumps forecast every time as we hit 3-4's the last 20 miles. Had 2 guys in the group that wanted to dive 1st so we invested an hour diving and were rewarded Mangos and a nice Hog Snapper. Interesting part of the dive was that they spotted several Lionfish roaming the reef. Due to the sporty conditions and lack of legal fish spotted on the dive we decided to forego bottom fishing and start trolling.
The action picked up pretty quick with a Dolphin (small) right away, then a 20lb class Blackfin Tuna not long after that hit the shotgun line. After that we were nearly spooled by what turned out to be a monster Kingfish around 60lbs that we released, to bad there were not any tourneys going on as this fish would have won. The King hit a Marauder plug as did the next Tuna in the box (15lbs), then were nearly spooled again on the same lure by a big fish that broke off after a 30 minute fight. That killed the party as we did not have any more Marauder plugs. Not bad action for 2 hours of trolling, unfortunately with short daylight this time of year, we had to crank up and make the run home soon after.
