Another day of bull redding - 09/07/2012

Went out fishing with Steve and Jay hoping for more tarpon and bull redfish action. Loaded the livewell with some 8" mullet right at the mayport boatramp. We tried for pogies but couldn't find any on the beach today.

Jay caught a pretty looking nurse shark.


I Jumped one tarpon on a ballon rig but I tightened the drag too tight and the line snapped. That was the only tarpon bite all morning. The inlet was loaded with BIG schools of mullet. We cast netted some more mullet and decided to hit some deep spots in the channel and caught about 6 big bull redfish. A couple of them were fatties. A bad storm was coming our way and we decided to call it a day.

What tide are you guys catching them on? Yesterday must have been about a 1pm high tide.... I think. Way to slay em!

Great job as usual guys. Being new to nearshore/inlet/offshore fishing, I've always been hesitant to mess with a shark. What method do you use for getting them into the boat? Grab the tail? I'm guessing I should invest in one of those dehooker things.

Wow! I've never fished for the bull reds in the river, but have been hearing about it for years. How much lead does it take to hold bottom? 8+ oz?
Sounds like cut mullet works great for bait. Anyone try quartered up crab? How deep do you fish? From what I've read it sounds like 30 - 40 ft of water along the edge of the channel is the place to be. Just looking for some tips. THanks!
