First Trip, First fish...cobia 8/19/12

Met up with Andriod this morning for first trip off Dania Pier. He was kind enough to lend me a jigging rod, jig and point me in the right direction. After sunrise broke the ice with small bonito. Followed his lead and kept drifting and jigging. Lost a trigger fish but was good sign. Lost a jig to a mystery break off. Re-rigged and saw a boil and threw the jig in that direction. Fish on and I was sure it was an amberjack. Got color and to my surprise cobia! Frank the Tank (showed em around Matheson Hammock a while back) and his brother were close and Frank tried gaffing a few times. After it slowed we put it between us and Frank grabbed it...thanks again. Measured in at 50 1/2 inches. Thought it was time to head in but Android saved me again with the fish bag.
Kept drifting and added another trigger fish and alamaco jack. GREAT first day and Android friends made it a team effort for sure.

It was nice to see everyone out there. My day started with my jigging reel locking up by 9AM, so I had to resort to my less sturdy trolling reel. I had the drag set light for trolling and forgot to tighten it up for jigging, when a large something hit. The line went zipping off and by the time I realized the drag was set too light I was down to the backing. Cranked up the drag and line popped, leaving me with one broken reel and one reel without any line. called it a day. Cerveza S Bueno managed a bonito and Frank said he had a big Almaco. Time for a new reel for labor day sale. (I don't get anything expensive enough to be worth repairing).
