Flamingo Snook and Redfish plus Hungry Miami Permit
Flamingo's Snook population has been on the rebound since the freeze a few years back and it is becoming evident that the Snook are making a strong comeback. In the last few weeks I have consistently caught and released over 25 juvenile Snooklets and they are hitting baits that are bigger then them. You need some extra knowledge of where they Snook are holding up but once you find them its on. The juvenile fish are mixed in with respectable 24-28 inchers and have been feeding aggressively on the higher stages of the tide along mangrove gulf shorelines. I have had a lot of success using Gulp and DOA jerkbaits.
Needless to say the year of the Redfish continues and the population is absolutely flourishing. In a trip last week my guests caught over 80 Redfish in a full day trip. We picked a few 20- 22 inchers on shrimp and jig head combos then we really got into an intense bite and caught the majority on Hookup jigs and Gulp shrimp. These fish have been gorging on Shrimp and small glass minnows and have been ranging from 18 to 27 inches. Again, Gulp jerkbaits as well as DOA CAL jigs have been deadly. On the windy days of March and April I have been able to locate fish in back bays protected from the winds as well in the shallow water bights. Focus on islands and mangrove shorelines that have a lot of current movement along with the presence of baitfish. These fish will use these areas as feeding stations and the good anglers will be taking advantage. Some very large Trout up to 6 pounds have been mixed in with the Redfish as well as the occasional big Sheepshead and the light tackle action has been incredible.
Some amazing Permit action is taking place offshore and I have landed trophy fish on every trip I have taken. Last Sunday we went 7 for 9 on Permit from 17 pounds to 29 pounds in a 3.5 hour trip. The fish are eating live crabs on jigs and are in there spawning period so the fish will need to be handled with care. There are also some big Amberjack and the Bonita have been hanging around the same areas on the edge.
