I use "the works" toilet bowl cleaner from Walmart, had the same situation you have. The works was recommended on this forum, it works perfectly. I used an old toothbrush and freshwater, took < 5 minutes and removed all corrosion with no collateral damage!
I use white vinegar. The pitting will stay no matter what you use however.
my foot would have been lodged in his *** about a week after the trip when i didnt have my gear back.. 18 months.. what patience lol
