On friday I fished early in the morning, on the flat before sunrise. the bite was good and then slowed down in the middle of the day. so on saturday I decided I would hit the flat at around 2:00pm and was pleasantly surprised to find only a couple boats and the bite was hot all the way till 5:30 when I decided I needed to drag myself away from the fish (that were still eating like crazy). The fish I caught were all singles or doubles tailing in very shallow water however in deeper water (1.5-2.5ft) there were some truly massive reds and a couple small schools of black drum. The water was a little murky and there was some floating grass. It was a little breezy on the afternoon trip but nowhere near as bad as it has been, the last few days have really been calm overall. I have been throwing dark colored flies with great results, black, grey, brown all fished very slowly. if youre fishing with spinning gear try dark jerk baits or paddle tails with weedless weighted worm hooks and just drag them slowly on the bottom near the tailing fish, quick movements of the bait seem to be spooking them. there are a ton of mullet out there right now too. Hope you guys can get out soon and catch 'em up!
Nice work sir! I am hoping to get out there tomorrow morning.. Unfortunately I have to be off the water no later than 930.. Its still 50/50.. Glad to see you did well and im surprised to hear of an afternoon bite that was that good...
I was surprised by the afternoon bite, but I found out last minute that there was a tournament saturday, so that mixed with the usual disney world aspect of weekend fishing made me go for it. It would be a short day man, but nothing like starting off the day with a nice tailing red
