    35 pounds of inshore fish - 1-31-12

Wind was stiffer and colder than the weatherman called for today 1-31-12, but the fishing was hot!! Fished different spots in the St. Johns river between the port and the big jetties. Really big yellowmouth trout to 18 inches were chewing my plastic jerkbaits. Kept 10 big ones that weighed a total of 20 pounds of whole trout. Caught 2 big sheepshead on fiddlers that weighed a total of 9 pounds. Then last but not least I caught a nice black drum on fiddlers that weighed 6 pounds! Could have caught a lot more of everything. The fish were biting hard at each spot but I was moving around seeing what I could catch at different spots. Besides, 35 pounds of whole inshore fish in my cooler made me happy enough!:full

When fishing the river with plastics, what size jighead are you using. Yellowmouth hold deep, correct?

Yes, yellowmouth trout hold in deep water where you can catch lots of smaller ones all year. But in the winter the really big ones arrive in and near the ocean. If you know where to fish, you will catch lots of them from 15 inches to well over 20 inches. These big ones put up a hell of a drag pulling fight! In the river I fish for the big ones in 6 to 15 feet of water using a 1/2oz jig head. I use the 1/2oz mostly due to the current. If less current, you can use less weight, depending on the depth of the fish.

In the coming months, there will be some very nice Yellowmouth in the downtown area as well. I have been on some crazy bites where I caught multiple fish in the 4-5lb range. When you get on a decent bite of Speckled Trout, move out a little deeper and the yella's will usually be there.
