09/26 Reef Drifting With Pilchards - Key West

With the Pilchards readily available and wanting to see the water clarity out at the reef, I grabbed a dozen or so of some Jumbo Pilchards and headed out to the reef. The day was overcast so really could not see what the clarity was like. Since the wind was running from the South, I really couldn't do a drift, so anchored in 100' just outside of the secondary reef. Dropping down, kept getting whacked by reef sharks so pulled anchor and did one drift. Turned out to be a good idea as I picked up a nice 21" flag Yellowtail and then a bonus 23" fat Mutton. Need to see if West Marine is open and if they have gotten chum back in stock for the next trip out.

Way ta go. Getting a Flag and a fat Mutton without chum is pretty decent Steve.

Went out to the reef just south of Key West on Thursday. Water is still green and poor visibility. No boats out there except two Comm guys pulling traps and one tourist boat at the Vandenberg. Yellowtails were thick with no one feeding them in weeks. Picked up a one man limit and we had enough. Was able to net some Ballyhoo and put them down on a bottom rod but no takers.

Man I'd love to get that 2nd place price and get all those Engel coolers.
