Fellas, they might as well open up a season for lions, tigers and elephants in state waters for this section of gulf.... There isn't a red snapper within 40 miles of shore down here in Sarasota. 28ft seems highly unlikely off Tampa. Closest I've caught them is 116ft of englewood in winter....

Now that sounds like a NOAA statement. At least the part about no ARS within 40 miles of West Central FL.

I fish off Bradenton/Sarasota. Have personally caught them as close as 14 miles in the past 2 years. Saw one while diving at 9 miles. I've heard stories of them by Egmont/Skyway/ 7 mile reef, but can't personally verify.

This is the first year I've ever caught ars in state waters. We were fishing for gags on opening day (50") and couldn't get a bait past the 20-22" ars. Buddy dove a spot that we were fishing for gags on yesterday in 40' and said he saw some really big ones. Didn't catch any yesterday tho.
