    Offshore for Gag opener 9/16/11

We had been planning to go offshore for the Gag opener for almost two months and we ended up with a week of nice weather for a change. Plan was to fish some new spots out West for Gags and Red grouper. Left Naples Ramp at 6:15 and it took us a while to get a well of pinfish, but was locked and loaded with the autopilot set around 8:15. First few spots were very slow only picking up a few small snapper and then Alex landed the biggest blue runner I have ever seen!

Finally headed out to some deeper stuff in 150' of water exactly 80 miles out and caught fish for a solid six hours. It was a slow and consistent bite with new stuff on each drift. We caught almost thirty ARS with four to five of them being PIGS! Of course all ARS were vented and released.

Landed five keeper Gags, Ten Red Grouper, our snapper aggregate included probably 25 yellowtails and three mangos. We also caught 20 vermillion, and roughly 25 lanes on this spot as the sun went down. Seas were less than 2' for the whole day and we pulled the boat in at 11:30 Friday night. Live baits were almost exclusively pinfish, we used some smaller blue runners, but not as successful with them. Also used shrimp, squid, and tipped grouper jigs. The first three drifts were slow with little current inside of 60 miles, but at 80 miles had a nice .5 to .6 drift to the SW and sometimes SE. We found a great new spot and cannot wait to get out there again. Enjoy the pictures!

Nice report! That Blue Runner is huge and what a shame those ARS have to go back.
Man, I am so jealous of you guys that can get that far out.

    Thanks for sharing.
