Finally winter break! Couldn't have come soon enough, winters in Texas are horrible! Got back in Fort Pierce yesterday afternoon and was on the water this morning at 11 in the Slayer. Fished up north around Wabasso in some back country spots to avoid this constant wind. Started the day poling and sight casting in the lee of spoil islands only finding 1 slot red, casting to him with the fly rod, and have him follow it right to the yak before deciding not to eat it! Moved on and threw DOA jigs around some culverts and pulled what I thought was a decent snook but ended up being a solid trout! Put the grips on him got some pics, went to grab the measuring stick and he shook the grips free of my hand and swam away... waited for him to resurface but ended up being a sacrifice to the gear gods.
Kept jigging the culverts and outflows to pick off a tiny redfish and an equally small snook but hey it was my slam for the day!
Went to a secret tarpon hole next and picked of another small snook on fly and a mangrove on fly before entering the hole.
Once there I ended up jumping a tarpon on the fly rod and then gave up on that stuff and broke out the stradic and DOA jig. Hooked and jumped another poon on the spin before he too threw the hook! Good fish to, 15 pounders or so. Sun set and day one was complete with 7.2 miles of paddling behind me, not a bad first day back on the indian river!
