A bit of everything in the surf....well, you know, except cobia...

Neighbor and I headed to the picnic tables today to catch the incoming tide. We started fishing around 9:30 and it was pretty slow. There were numerous rods in the water before we got there and there seemed to be a lot of sitting and watching rather than jerking and reeling but the water was still low. There is a great trough along our beach now in that area and we were hopeful that, as the tide rose, the fish would get lively. The whiting were there but spotty and most were right on the sand. Many anglers packed up and left while we caught fish but they were all flinging baits as far as they could while we were pitching ours out underhand. In the midst of the slow to moderate whiting bite, my neighbor hauled in a nice surprise red of about 25.5 inches and a bit later I got a real nice pompano - one of my biggest. The pomp and red hit dead shrimp (that was all we had) within 30 feet of the sand. We caught a few small blues and jacks and one small shark on a whiting head - he actually never had the hook but got lassoed. It was a fun day. We fished until 12:30 and called it quits when the shrimp ran out. As with my previous report....there is little doubt about what the whiting are eating....see the second photo...

PJ - picnic tables are about a mile south of the Gate Station across A1A from the Fire Department - you can look for their flag as a land mark as the turn in for the little park with the picnic tables can sneak up on you.
