Estero Area Island Report

While in the market for a new vessel I decided to return to my roots for a few days and do some land based fishing. Dispite the wind and dodging sporadic rain I went out on two evenings back to back. The 30th and 1st.

Pilchards are around but not thick. The ones ive netted are nice (4 inches) The lady's, macks, and mullet are a different story.(All over) Snook are patrolling the beaches and pass and becoming very active at dusk. Didn't see any tarpon but there food source is definetly around. Both these fish were caught on mid outgoing tide around sunset. Snook on lady. Lemon on bft. Also got a 22inch trout but didnt care to photograph him.

Good size lemon. I'll be fishing Venice this weekend.

What's a BFT, as I'm assuming you don't mean blackfin tuna? Nice fish, snook are one of my favorites.

Where would be a good spot to catch some spanish mackeral from shore?
i normally just catch them as by-catch

I can remember being in the Estero Area back in high school and doing VERY well around the passes on those outgoing tides...especially in May and June. Lots of snook down there. Nice report.

Yes, I do. The carcass.

Spanish can be caught fairly easy enough off the beach in the spring and fall. Different weather patterns speed or delay the onslaught. If fishing from shore and bait s plentiful the further off the sandbars is best. You can always fish Naples, fm, and sanibel piers. Those kastmaster spoons with trace wire are lethal. Legal live Spanish are epic big snook and tarpon baits. Useful for many other applications.
