Would you eat a 14 lb barracuda you caught off of SW FL coast despite the threat of ciguatera poisoning?

Why would you want too? I guess if I was starving and needed food that bad I would. Same for a sculpin.

Well it is like this...we caught one, grilled it up and ate it before we realized it was a barracuda and not a King Mackerel as I had previously thought.  Then I found out about about the cig poisioning threat.

No.   I have always had ciguatera phobia.    If you wake up and cannot get out of bed then supposedly that is your disease.    =)    (sounds like a normal Monday but seriously supposedly your muscles don't work very well. )

SW Florida is one of the places where I would eat barracuda without much worry.  The lack of coral reefs and the algae eaters that dwell on them makes it less likely that ciguatoxin will build up in these barracuda.  You're far more likely to get it in tropical locations and any large reef dweller can give it to you.  I know two people who came down with it after eating a black grouper in Key West.  Barracuda is actually very good when grilled and I've eaten it twice at restaurants in the Caribbean.  On Puerto Rico it's very popular but they don't eat them over two feet in length.  Once you take the skin off there's none of that strong odor and they're far better than any kingfish.  At the same time, I release all that I catch.

I lived through an episode of ciguatera back in the late 80's

eating Hog snapper I spearfished in the
Tortuga's.

I still eat
hog fish when I can get it.

re: Hawkboat

Thanks gents for your replies.

Well I think I'd eat another one again if I caught one.  It was VERY VERY good and we didn't get sick.  But next time maybe I'd eat first and wait 6 hours before "releasing the catch" to the fam.

re: weaz

that's a negative...we've never caught either a barracuda or a king mackerel, and quite frankly, never seen either before.  I had always thought those were king mackerels hanging around out there, as I have had ppl tell me they caught KMs out at structure.

Ouch!

I like barracuda on the grill.

I take the skin off as soon as possible.

Marinade in Jack Daniels and Fresh Black Pepper.

I eat it like a burger Emsmile
