According to the Alaska Community Action on Toxics, the use of Corexit during the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused "respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood disorders" in people.[6] According to the EPA, Corexit is more toxic than dispersants made by several competitors and less effective in handling southern Louisiana crude.[10]

Alternative dispersants which are approved by the EPA are listed on the National Contingency Plan Product Schedule[11] and rated for their toxicity and effectiveness

One variant was used in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska. In 2010, Corexit EC9500A and Corexit EC9527A were used in unprecedentedly large quantities in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.[1] On May 19, 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency gave BP 24 hours to choose less toxic alternatives to Corexit, selected from the list of EPA-approved dispersants on the National Contingency Plan Product Schedule[2], and begin applying them within 72 hours of EPA approval of their choices.[3] BP has used Corexit 9500A and Corexit 9527A thus far, applying 600,000 US gallons (2,300,000 l) on the surface and the company's estimate of 55,000 US gallons (210,000 l) underwater.[4]

Now here is where it get's interesting....this one is for you mr. detective find the money coldie.

Nalco makes the chemical.
On Nalco's board of directors:

Rodney F Chase - former Deputy Chief Group Executive of - you guessed it - BP.
- Also served on board of Lehman Brothers.

Carl M Casale - Executive VP and CFO of MONSANTO.

Daniel S Saunders - Former President EXXON MOBIL

NALCO's largest shareholder? Berkshire Hathaway, owned by Warren Buffett

Source?

Makes sense for Nalco board to include other chemical companies.

Nalco makes water treatment chemicals that are probably in the water you drink. Nalco makes a very large number of chemicals - and yes, some are nasty.

From the Nalco website:

http://www.nalco.com/news-and-events/nalco-oil-dispersant-information.htm

Tylerod, what solution do you bring forward?

I agree with the other chemical companies hiring like minded but as you see above in my 1st post.....there were several other chemicals that are less harsh and more effective that were passed over.....and for what reason?

As far as solutions are concerned....i suggest public hanging.

re: tylerod

BP has notified the EPA that it can’t just switch to another chemical dispersant. It doesn’t have anything else it can use. And by the way, Corexit – the EPA-approved dispersant which has been the standard product for the last 20 years used in dealing with oil spills – is “an EPA pre-approved, effective, low-toxicity dispersant that is readily available, and we continue to use it.”

So there.

We said below that the EPA’s directive Thursday that BP switch from using Corexit to something else was impractical in the extreme, given that chemical dispersant isn’t something you can just go to Wal-Mart and buy in suitable quantities to affect a 5,000-barrel-a-day (or whatever amount is coming out of the Macondo well) oil spill. And the idea that giving BP 72 hours to find something less toxic was even remotely viable was flat-out stupid – anyone could look at the fact that you need some 23,000 gallons a day of the stuff to keep it in supply at your current rate of use and realize that you have to basically commandeer a production line or else you’re going to run out.

BP has that with Corexit. They don’t have it with anything else. And that’s what they told the EPA tonight.

BP spokesman Scott Dean said Friday that BP had replied with a letter “that outlines our findings that none of the alternative products on the EPA’s National Contingency Plan Product Schedule list meets all three criteria specified in yesterday’s directive for availability, toxicity and effectiveness.”

There is another dispersant out there on EPA’s NCP Project Schedule called Sea-Brat 4, made by an outfit called Alabaster Corporation out of Houston, and it’s billed as a less-toxic alternative. Alabaster says they have 100,000 gallons of Sea-Brat 4 available. But 100,000 gallons is four days’ worth of dispersant as this spill goes. Do they have the capacity to ramp up production enough to meet demand for 23,000 gallons a day? Can they ramp that production up to the required volume in four days? If so, maybe BP should reverse their stance, if for no other reason than that at this point the PR value of not fighting with the EPA or envirofascists like Edward Markey is worth its weight in crude oil.

Sea-Brat 4’s website also recommends using, for “a 1000 gallon spill use 200 gallons of SEA BRAT concentrate and 800 gallons of water. 40 lbs. of blend ABB microbes would be wise.” If the size of this spill is, say, 5 million gallons, that would mean BP would need a million gallons of Sea-Brat and 200,000 pounds of microbes. Anybody know where you can pick up 100 tons of microbes?

The guess here is BP can’t replace their current supplier of dispersant with any sense of logistical practicality. Like we said earlier tonight, there isn’t enough Sea-Brat 4 available to meet BP’s needs and BP knows it. Nalco and ExxonMobil can, on the other hand, supply enough Corexit to meet the demand. And in that respect this is a microcosm of the Left’s arguments about fossil fuels – they whine that oil and coal are dirty and yucky and we need to get energy from something else, and the best they can do for an alternative are windmills and solar panels which don’t produce enough reliable energy to replace fossil fuels with.

So instead of recognizing that while Corexit is a little less than optimum for the environment but if the oil is going to be dispersed it’s the only real option, we get juvenile assaults and the blame game from people like Markey, who said this:

“BP had chosen one of the most toxic and least effective chemicals that were approved for use.”

re: empty_pockets

So you're rationalization is that they have they most supply therefore they are the only solution? You don't find it convenient that only 1 company can profit off of an oil spill....a company with previous BP exec? Is it not oddly convenient that another chemical has not been invented in 20 years?....the same 20 years that the most technological and biological advances have been made.... or is because none of the companies have BP execs on their board? BP didn't even build the f'n dome that was in their contingency plan.... they had to build it after the damn thing blew....yet you keep defending them. It's sickening.

ZI-400 30% more effective than corex on louisiana oil.

Never mind...i found your source...LOL If you believe the POTUS who received a whopping 77k in political donations from BP would risk his career on such a miniscule amount of money compared to his future earning potential then there is no "hope" for you.

But i'm sure the 2 million Cheney received from Haliburton .....who also f'd up this rig....is ok..... right?.... patiently waiting your answer.

So maybe that is why they are not going to allow volunteers to clean birds or touch anything with oil on it.

and why they keep telling those oil workers to keep their hazmat suits and respirators on even though is 100 degrees in the shade

By changing the subject i should have clarified....derailing the non-partisan thread with more anti-obama rhetoric. I wonder how many threads here do not contain 1 anti bush or anti obama reply? Very few I imagine.
Maybe i was harsh but this tactic is played out.

Fact: President Obama has taken more money from BP than any other candidate in 20 years.

Enjoy.

Even if that were true then exactly what does it have to do with anything

Obama didn't drill the well, or put the concrete in or decide that we didn't need the acoustically operated blow out preventer

come to think of it it was our old friend cheney's company that did a crappy job cementing the well

and If I remember right it was cheney in 2002 that changed the rules and said that the oil companies no longer neeeded to use those half a million dollar acoustic blow out preventers

20 you sure you want to make a political issue out of this?

How much would that be? A million? I see you you know a lot about this subject, so you must know how much.

re: Mister-Jr

Who cares how much money the oil companies throw around in our government. WE all know our government is "bought and paid for" by corporate America. If its not the oil companies is the bankers or the pharmaceutical industry or the Insurance industry or etc.

Now to get back to the topic of this thread. Seems a bunch of the shrimpers and fishermen BP hired to pull those booms got sick yesterday and they sent the whole fleet home.

Seems I read somewhere that the dispersants cause respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood disorders" in people.

No telling what it will do to the fish and wildlife exposed to it

Might be why we haven't heard about cleaning oil contaminated birds like you usually here about during an oil spill. They know they are going to die from exposure to the dispersants.

They won't let any volunteers touch anything that has oil on it. Only paid workers

Who cares? Thats the attitude that puts these A-holes in office to begin with. The fact that lobbyists can buy out politicians and is protected by the constitution needs to change.

Its why Im probably leaving the republican party soon. They are bought out by pharmaceutical companies and religious groups and will forever keep the idiotic war on drugs illegal, prostitution, gambling, ect.

The democratic party - well hell, everyone knows how I feel about that group of morons.

Theres only one place for me to go.
