John Barber has put together a comment page for everyone to make comments to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council on the pending Red Snapper closure and also tothe Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on the consistency regulations for the present Vermillion Snapper and Grouper closures.

We need every one to be heard on these issues, we made a great showing last week at the public hearings now lets let them have the other barrel.

This will only take a few minutes of your time and will greatly help us in the fight!

Please go to: safmc.deep-blue-sea.org

and post your comments

re: JohnB

Today is the last day, cutoff is 5pm.

We have gotten great response from you guys up in the NE, you guys rock!

If you haven't submitted comments regarding closing the ocean from SC to Key West to bottom fishing today is the last day.  Tell your friends.

If you couldn't make it to the public hearing, or didn't get a chance to speak, here is your chance.

re: JohnB

From Jacksonville Daily Record 11/25/2010: • City Council member John Crescimbeni is sponsoring legislation urging the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to not impose restrictions on snapper and grouper fishing in local offshore waters. The legislation contends the current data on the fish population of those species is “incomplete or insufficient.”

re: Shine

I want to thank everyone who submitted comments on these issues.  One of the most important aspects of fisheries management that has been lacking is the participation and support of all the groups that use the fishery.  SAFMC/NMFS has not had anyone other than a few lobbyists speak for the recreational anglers, and if we don’t speak up, no one else will.  2 years ago we had 11 recreational anglers show up at the Port Canaveral public comments meeting.  We probably had 20 times that 2 weeks ago, and 100’s of online comments submitted.  As opportunities to participate come up, I will post the information.

FS moderators, Thank you for allowing us to post this, and supporting recreational anglers rights.

JohnB,

It would be nice if you could get your city on board like Jacksonville did It only took one voice to get it started and now we have the city behind us with letters of resolution 2009-920. We are shooting to get all coastal communities on board with the city councils even though public comment is over the US Secretary of commerce will review comments from local governments during his review.

re: WATTEVER

To some extent, we have.

The Brevard Economic Devl. and the Brevard Tourism made statements and proclamations at the public hearings down at PC.

As more and more people realize what is going on, and what this will mean, they are stepping up.

You guys up in the NE rock, I get lots of responses and support.  We have been a little slower down here, but we have a couple of clubs and key people that are getting the job done.  This is really taking off at a grass roots level.

The two biggest groups I can't crack are the charter captains and related marine industries.  We tried to get affadavits on economic impact, and got close to zero response.  If you have businesses that would be willing to file affidavits of economic impact, they would be very useful in the next lawsuit.

Thanks again,

JohnB

re: JohnB

JohnB, The law suits are good. But I have taken another approach up here ( I'm not a lawyer) so my idea was get the law changed. The reason being after the June vote by SAFMC I new the only way to fix it was do what they kept saying which was "They are bound by law to act" so I thought it was time to get the local government on board to put some meat behind the fisherman now thats accomplished time to get more coastal community local governments to fall in from N.C., S.C., GA, and the rest of FL coastline. Then we go State and State congressional representatives to get The Magnuson Stevens Act amended seems like it might be the right move at this point seeing whats going on up in New England. I maybe wrong I'm just a dumb Electrician what do I know but it is gaining speed right now.

Please ask our managers to restore our  fisheries to their former abundance.  Please feel free to forward or download this photo to demonstrate the former abundance.

Mikey the only thing that picture depicts is how uninformed and greedy people were back then which would explain why there are not many 50 year old fish today. Which further proves that the current regulations have been successful in sustaining a good younger age group of fish which will mature to the 50 year old fish age level. Also that picture only shows maybe two snapper hanging that might be 50 year old fish and 90% of the hanging fish are grouper what is laying on the ground does not depict what I would call stellar size snapper.

I would call that picture "GREED" You would not see recreational fishers come in with a catch like that today because of regulations not because they are not out there.
