To many years of slinging oysters and lifting fish boxes has had the same effect on my shoulder as on the back. Had the back fixed a few years ago. Now the shoulder needs work. Has gotten to the point that you can feel it grinding if you put your hand on it........and it hurts!
So any experience with doctors that are good at this??
Call Dr. Hakim on the Westside located near St Vincents. He worked "magic" on my shoulder.
Hewes RF16 with all the goodies. Lovin' the backwater scene!
bswiv,
One of my clients is very well respected within the orthopedic community. Dr. Lynn Norman, he is with the ortho group at St. Vincents. I know his expertise is with hips, hands, some spine, and shoulders I believe. I know from working with him on a personal level he is extremely detailed oriented. Good guy as well, builds reproduction antique furniture and RC planes in what little spare time he has. Good luck with it.

I recently (end of August 09) had a bunch of work on my shoulder done and it is better then new now. Years of football, weightlifting, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing and construction work have just butchered it and wore away bone, ligaments and cartilage. It wasn't until I got my *** handed to me by something huge (probably a Goliath Grouper, line broke but man was I in some major pain the entire fight) out at the Middle Grounds during an overnight trip we took in July that I said to hell with it and went and started researching doctors and surgeons to get some work done. I did an initial checkup on it and found out that I needed alot more then I thought. When I was having X-rays done the guy (UF Doctoral Student) doing them and looking over them said Teabow recently had shoulder surgery done for the exact same thing. I had no clue and I don't think he was supposed to say anything to me about other patients especially a star athlete but he recommended the same guys that did him so I setup an appointment.
Dr. Moser and Dr. Indelicato at Shands in Gainesville did the work. If you are a Gator fan and watch the games then you have seen them before. They are both the sideline doctors for the Gator football and Basketball teams. The reason I choose them was that they are rated amongst the very best in the nation and have performed multiple (1000's) orthopedic surgeries on other very high end, big name athletes. They worked a freaking miracle because my shoulder feels stronger then it has ever before. I'm a big, 240lb muscular, athletic dude that loves outdoors, sports, exercise, fishing, running, swimming snowboarding, etc. I can do it all again with no worry's.
The procedures I had done were a Left shoulder arthroscopy with limited debridement of postterior labrum, Synovectomy of the glenohumeral joint ,Subacromial decompression with formal bursectomy, limited acromioplasty, CA ligament resection. Sounds like fun stuff huh? Thank god I have Blue Cross Blue Shield because the $ 35,000 - $ 40,000 in hospital, surgeons, and physical therapy bills only ended up costing me about $ 750 total.
Some tips.
1. Get the pain pump, it makes the first couple days so much nicer. If you have the surgery you'll find out more about what it is prior to surgery.
2. Get a second opinion from another reliable doctor.
3. Dont skimp on the Physical Therapy what so ever.
4. Plan to be 100% useless for a couple of days following surgery and have zero use of your arm for a couple of weeks after. (that's when PT definitely helps alot).
5. Dont be scared of pain in your shoulder during recovery and PT. If it doesnt hurt alittle during PT then your not pushing it hard enough.
There's a bunch more I could tell you but I don't want to bore anyone else here. If you have other questions or concerns just ask here or PM me and I will give you an Honest answer.

I can't speak of shoulders but Im having a total knee done Tue with Dr. Duffy at Heekin Orthopedic. My experience with them over the past year leading to this has been nothing short of exceptional. I would reccommend speaking with this group. My past experience with JOI was the opposite.

I went to the Mayo Clinic 7 years ago for my shoulder. Years of chronic dislocation from some real old ski racing injuries caused a major wicked loose and floppy rotator cuff. They said they had never seen one so bad.......the whole team came to look at it.
Anyway, if your insurance works with them I would highly recommend giving them a call. They are one of the best in the country at what they do.

When I was a teenager, I dislocated my shoulder skateboarding. Over the course of the next 14 years, I dislocated it 26 additional times, while surfing, wakeboarding, swimming, baseball, picking stuff up, even just waving my arm. I actually broke the bottom of the socket off one time, putting it back in myself. It got so bad that I just stopped raising my arm above shoulder level for years, but I resisted having it repaired because the surgeons I consulted with all told me I lose 25-30% rotation.
Eventually, my son was born and when he got to be 3 years old and started T-ball, I realized I couldn’t even play catch with my own boy. That was the turning point for me and I spent months researching orthopedic surgeons and getting opinions. I finally settled on Dr. Craig Mintzer, an Orthopedic Sports Surgeon at Jewett Orthodaedic Clinic. He claimed he could get me at least 90% rotation. (I won’t go into details of the surgery, other than to say it was a total mess when he got in there. I have the pictures).
Well, long story short, I got to play catch with my boy (and later my daughter too), even coached a few seasons. And now it’s been almost 10 years since the surgery and I can honestly say that my “damaged” shoulder is still 99% as good as the other one. It’s got as much range of motion and never gives me any pain. The only reason I won’t say it’s 100% is that I feel a little tightness at the very extreme ends of certain motions, such as straight up and almost behind my head. My only “complaint” with Dr. Mintzer is that he would not give me the piece of broken bone he removed from the joint. I thought it would be neat to have, but he would have none of it.
Best of luck to you, whoever you choose, just choose carefully.
Thank you, all of you, for the good information. I've got about 3 or four months to pick someone and get it scheduled. That should be enough time to get it looked at by at least 2 if not 3 doctors. Then as soon as gator season is over it gets done.
Of course that means I'll be hunting from the ground, and with a pistol, for the first part of hunting season.....but sacrifices must be made.

I would choose someone other than JOI.
They did my kneee (ACL) and my shoulder (Lots of issues)
and the surgeries were done well.
However, the aftercare was very poor. I could have sued
for how they handled an infection that developed in the knee but I am not that type of guy.
So, I found the aftercare and the PT to be very poor.
Good luck - get it fixed and you'll feel lots better. I know I do.
Oh - completely off topic but thanks a bunch for running an excellent seafood market. The selection is the best I've ever seen and the service is terrific. It looks like you raided Mandarin High's National Honor Society for your workforce. Lots of really good, respectful kids.
Good luck to you.
