We are gaining a little speed on pulling this together. The plan is to meet up in the river down town and have a peaceful protest to the SAFMC closure amendments. Everyone who participates should keep in mind that they should do this in an orderly fashion and make sure your boat is in order with all safety equipment and follow all boating rules.
So anyone that is willing to take off and show up I plan on being at the Landing dock with coffee going at 7:00 am we can talk about the plan for the day and Robert Johnson is going to be working with the media so maybe we can get some coverage in the news. I will use this thread to keep everyone interested informed.
Please post if you think you can attend this Boat Float Protest
Thanks Earl
My cell is 759-3767
TEAM GetAFFtrIT will be there on the old SEA HAWK Earl. Should hit downtown about noon. This could be a very good opportunity to get some publicity on this. I'm looking forward to it.
JUST ANOTHER PERSISTANT B*STARD
As long as my next grandchild isn't being born that day I can be there(she's due in early Dec but you never know).
MYOTT is on board. Anything I can do to help out I am in
Perhaps you have missed the announcement.........this is not a protest or spectacle designed to manage resources by lynch mobs or popular demand......but a public hearing providing you with the opportunity to bring your science and management plans for the fishery. The Commission will be quite impressed with all of your diversions, protests and whining.
Just another BH ACT
I've been in touch with my buddy Charles that covers the Jags media, (trying to pick his brain) and he says we need to do a press release about it. Anyone who blogs should, and we should all make calls to the local news companies. Tell them they are trying to shut down bottom fishing offshore of jacksonville, and there will be a peacefull floatilla of protesters downtown. Does anyone know any of the (head boat) charter captains? The bigger vessels down there would help make more of an impact. Tweet about it. Anything could make a difference.
Would megaphones be a good idea?(or loud hailers) Perhaps to congregate pedestrians?
Maybe fliers at the local tackle shops and seafood restaurants?
Any more ideas?

Tony I've shot a few emails to some of the news channels and have yet to receive a reply. It would be great to have some of them on hand to get this into the publics eyes. A pile of us show up down town for this I really don't see how it won't get attention though. I think Cpt. Mikey is Holly Binns in disguise. ;)
JUST ANOTHER PERSISTANT B*STARD
Mr. Michael J. Leary,
Will you be present at the meeting to make another presentation similar to the one you made at the Atlantic Beach meeting in 2004? I hope you are better prepared as you were nearly run off by the council for your rambling incoherent response, your lack of knowledge regarding the issues at hand was clearly exposed. Below is a copy of your poorly prepared response, lobbying for closures. You admit you previously ran sportfishing charters (using a public resource for private gain), yet you lobby to take recreational limits away from me, fellow forum members, and even your own son all based on your agenda driven motives. Have you no shame sir
I believe your testimony starts at the bottom of page 17 and runs through page 19.

Mike,
I can't believe I'm waisting my time to respond to your post on my thread. Your comments are not welcome and do nothing to disencourage our efforts to have these issues brought to the general public attention. Contrary to your belief this is still a free country no matter how much you and your kind believe that you can call the shots as to others personnel freedom of speech and the right to hold a peaceful assembly. It is people like you that push me ever so harder to pursue my god given rights to voice my opinion and You are more than welcome to show up and voice your own opinion but from what I have seen out of you on this forum you have no guts to show your face and have a public voice other than behind the computer and in secure surroundings like maybe a SAFMC meeting. Prove me wrong. For you to come on here and assume that the recreational fishers are a bunch of hot head gun totting riot minded people is an insult I as well as many others on here take very personnel.
Your views are well known on this forum and your versions of the truth are some what distorted but that is your right to have those views. I guess after your years of of profiting of of our natural resource you have since grown a conscience and must try to cleanse that guilt by proclaiming that anyone who exercises their right to fish is nothing more than a thief.
As to the concerns of how this would effect the SAFMC meeting is of little concern to me My agenda is to bring to the public attention this absolute circus of so called management practices the committee has shown. Trust me the committee does not care to hear any thing from the recreational fishing community this meeting is not being put on out of concerns for our concerns it is a requirement by law that they follow all procedures in the implementation of any amendments approved by the committee.
In your words " but a public hearing providing you with the opportunity to bring your science and management plans for the fishery. " Here in lies my frustrations , It is not the public responsibility to come up with science or management plans. This committee has failed to do their job and follow the laws set up by the Magnuson-Stevens Act. The Magnuson - Stevens Act says that the duties of the regional committees is to determine over-fished species and then implement management rules for the over-fished species. Notice it said MANAGEMENT some where in it's process the committee has confused the Magnuson-Stevens Act with the Preservation act "over-fished" dose not mean extinct. Closing down vast areas of ocean to fishing and closing the fishery for a species for an undetermined time period are acts of the preservation laws for extinct species. The argument by the recreational fishery is not that sound management does not need to be implemented but that the correct management be implemented based on correct science. The committee has stated several times that their science is flawed but they are only required to use the best science available in their management decisions. I'm sorry but when they say the recreational catch numbers is based on a formula and not actual counts they have not used the best data available. I will agree that the committee has a very difficult job and have made attempt to come up with a good plan but to settle with the easy way out and just close everything is a cop out and an excuse to bypass their requirements to manage an over-fished species for the special enterest groups agendas which are ever so present in the committee members personnel beliefs and yes I'm calling a spade a spade.
So in the end Mike I want to thank you for maybe bringing a few more people out to the float just to spite you.

Earl, I'll be down there around 9a. Can I raft up with you? You got the coffee, I got the donuts.
That ignorant little rodent (capt mike, but that's just my opinion) thinks that this is a meeting of the safmc....what a dips@#*
Old hippies just don't get it. And you're right Earl, he doesn't have the nads to show up at any function that would have some of us there. He's nothing but a little keyboard rat. One who runs and hides after posting something inflamatory.
I really don't know why he's still allowed to do what he does....I mean all he does is incite crap on this forum....then justmejoe calls him out on some stuff and his post is banned.
So here ya go mikey (and just for your info....I always type your name in small letters, as a form of disrespect ) there are many forums where you can spout your wrong headed views on, so why don't you take your knuckle-draggin' butt back to those places and leave the men alone.

I have been
with the newsmedia for a couple of years. With the cities budget cuts and loss of revenues, I have also been trying to get the Mayor to wake up. ( I am Yelling ) WE THE SALTWATER SPORTFISHER PEOPLE BRING IN OVER 600 MILLION DOLLARS TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY EACH AND EVERY YEAR!!!!! That is from the Florida Georiga border to the south city limits of St. Augustine. Shut down the fishing, and loose that at the very least, probably even twice that. The only year I have a study for is 2008, but just the Jax Greater Kingfish tournament brought in 13.8 Million dollars to the local economy! Yet they keep ignoring us.
Fishing.... It's much more important than life & death!!!
Earl, If I can get the Yami back to running good before then, I'll join the Floatilla. That's seeing how my boss will give me the day off.

I don't think I can make it all day, but at the least I will be at the meeting. I work right across the street. If I can swing it, I will tow the boat with me to work and put it in the water over by River City Brewery and join the floatilla for the afternoon.

Earl,
Since the Crown plaza is on the South bank of the river near the Main Street bridge, where will we be meeting and tying up our boats exactly? I'm sure I will see you guys when I get down there, I was just wondering ahead of time. Thanks
I'm sure we will be scattered all over some anchored and some just idling around. Any time you can show up will be good.
I also had a talk with Joel Cunningham who is the president of the Ancient City Game Fish Assoc. and they will have a representation on the water with us as well
I would hope all recreational fishers offshore and inshore make a presents known this is a public awareness effort our part.

Mike, I've put the word out that I would be on channel 8 vhf and my cell is 759-3767 if anyone needs to find out what is going on also Joel from the Ancient city game fish assc. is going to have some boats representing them. I believe they will have a banner on one of the boats to show representation of a larger group. If you come do you think you could get a banner representing the JOSFC? I'll have a banner representing the offshore rodeo guys I think that this will show that there are larger groups represented than what will actually be out there.
I think that some symbol that ties the whole group together like a black flag or banner of sorts representing the attempts to end or kill our rights as recreational fishers. I will have an American flag and Black flags along with statement banners. We are picking up steam with the numbers of boats and I'm proud to be with everyone of ya
I am hopeful a couple of Marlin club guys will show with representation but they have voting going on that night for officers.
Senator Lemieux stood up for the recreational fishers questioning the data NOAA is accepting for this closure and demanding that we recreational fishers have a larger voice in this process. It is time to get the general public informed more on this subject only numbers can help move our efforts at this point and should have been sooner.

The Arlington marina at the foot of the Matthews bridge (on the east side of the river) has gas as well.

Actually this is the type of action that will get theattention of the Council. A protest to their mismanagement of the fisheries is exactly what we need. Just keep it peacefull and respectful. But remember once you get there, make sure everyone makes their comments to the Councilmember.
To all that participate, I applaud you efforts.

I have wrap around curtains to keep mostly dry. Since the meeting is at the Crown Plaza, is there ample parking for the boats to raft up so we can actually attend the meeting? I know there is space at The Landing if we need to tie up there and walk across the Main Street bridge. Glad to see that everyone is coming together this week!!! Hope that everyone has written all their government officials.

Looks like we will have a pretty good showing down town on the water . So far myself and others from lakeshore, some from mandrin , a few from St. augustine comming up the ditch, Tommy and few others from Mclenny, AJ and few from the JOSFC, and I believe some representation from Fernandina. I'll be on ch 8 VHF and my cell 759-3767 American Flags symbol of the day. Ch 4 says they are aware of it and plan some coverage so lets not make our fishery look bad.
Robert Johnson said the Cape expected 4000-5000 people or thats what showed up at the meeting today. It would be nice if we could show that much public attention up here!
