2 months later I am in marathon right now and jumped my first and second tarpon. 2nd fish snaps the rod in half. Hoping these guys will take care of me even though I don't think the rod was ever registered.

Thoughts? Or anyone know the guys over there?

Hi all. It seems as though there are some permits taking up residence underneath our dock. I have never seen them until tonight. One thing I notice is that they are very aggressive with the bites. Damn. I was just reading about them. They were really nailing my bait but I could not land one. They don't seem to care that I am looking right at them while they are pulling my bait under the dock.

Anybody have some tips they can share with me for trying to catch these?

I have attached 2 pictures which shows our dock. The first picture (which is actually the 2nd one) that has the red lid (from my cat litter pail) is where I caught the snook Sunday night. I had just dropped the line down right by the rocks & that is where he was caught.

The 2nd picture (which is the 1st one) shows a bigger picture of the dock. I usually sit on the first step you see & just drop the line right down near the rocks. A lot of times I get a lot of mangrove snappers swimming around (this is when I put out a chum bag) or I will squirt some menhaden oil to draw fish. What usually happens is I will get some Jack Crevalles circling around once or twice & then they some back & nail the bait. I also get a big barracuda from time to time that pays me a visit as well. I never really cast out into the middle of the canal because I don't get anything. If I cast out into the canal it would be on a slack tide using a top water lure & I would go over tonthenother dock which is a shared dock.

This reel reminds me of a Quantum Smoke or an Okuma Trio. But these inshore to near-shore reels are made from Penn. Which are scheduled to be released in the Fall of 2013. They are supposedly a step up from the battle models they released not too long ago. Not much info on them yet, but hopefully they did something to improve the line lay because the line lay on the battle did not meet any expectations I would expect from a spinning reel that I paid 100 bucks on.

Title says it all. I rolled out this morning to get a little time on the water, since I have to work an evening shift today. I had visions of landing another Cobia after seeing my boy's slob from yesterday. Well, it didn't take long. I had a 25lb Cobia decide to hit my Yozuri deep diver after I got out past the second bar. Fought a short fight and had him yak side. Hit him with the gaff and he flips out doing the gator roll. In the process he slips off the gaff and bent out the treble on the lure and off he swam. I was livid. Cussing at no one for hours. Pulled up one trophy snapper on a spot, then moved to another pulling the only live bait I had, a big hardtail. Well somehow he wiggles off, so now I am stuck pulling nasty cigsicles I had. On the way to our famed Trigger hole I see some birds working the water pretty hard. I start heading that way when I notice an odd thump on the King rig. Bout to get even more upset cause I figured it was remora time. Pick up the pole and start to move a little more when I feel deadweight grab the bait. It felt substantial, so I did my Bass fisherman impression and set the hook as hard as I could. That's when **** hit the fan. 200 yds of line came off my spool in seconds. I could see smoke coming out of the reel. I start hauling *** towards the fish to try and catch up. The only time I have ever seen line move that fast was when I accidentally hooked flipper. 15 minutes I'm working this fish. I take some line and he hauls *** again. All this time I had no idea what it could be. There was no jumping and I couldn't see color till he came along side the yak. When I did finally see him, all I saw were stripes. Big stripes! I'm kinda upset that my main GoPro didn't start recording when I hit the button. But I did get footage from my front camera right when I landed him. You will get a chuckle out of my antics. I got a little overzealous in my celebrating. 36lbs and 54". I don't know if this year can get any better, but it's been a hell of a ride so far! Tight Lines!
Late in the fight you see me switching it out of low gear(I forgot it was in) then check out that pathetic gaff attempt(what was he thinking),I used to bottom fish with penn 6/0 but saw myself and others really struggling to get a few turns on the handle with drag locked down on big grouper on the initial run so I decided to try it and so far its worked pretty good for me and my wife (who used to get rocked up by even smaller grouper) has been able to boat grouper up to 24.lbs with her 2 speed reel by starting out in low gear then switch once the grouper is well of bottom or gasing up.I got the idea when my buddys wife was fighting a big tuna(84lbs) and was struggling to turn the handle well into the fight when I decided to punch it in low gear on my tld50 and she immidately started gaining line and soon the fish was at the boat wore down and ready for the gaff.

I guess this would be more of a report than anything but i had to share our excitement with everybody.

After 4 trips in 4 years wreck fishing with Capt. Dave Schugar at http://www.sweetenufcharters.com/ while in Marathon. We finally went for a Dolphin trip instead of a wreck trip. We called Capt Dave the night before our trip to ask him what we should fish for, he immediately said no way to the wreck fishing. There was not enough current for the wrecks to be working. So we decided it was finally time for the Dolphin trip. Well that was the best decision we have ever been told to make!

We started about 15 miles out and had the first hook up on the first bird we saw. I let my wife Dawn take this one since she has really been wanting to boat a Mahi for a really long time. Well it turned out to be a good for her first one.

We continued to troll looking for birds and floaters. Just a short time later we spotted another bird working. There was another good fish under the bird. It was my turn on the rod. Once again it was a good one and my first Mahi.

We kept trolling looking for birds and floaters. Came upon a bird and a milk crate floating. Picked up 3 schoolies off of this spot. Things got slow so we moved further out without finding much success. We found an area of floating weeds and lot’s of Flying Fish so we went back to trolling we were just trolling along looking for stuff and shooting the breeze. As I was looking around I spot a large area of water off the bow that was a lighter color. As soon as I said something we were immediately surround by the wrong kind of Dolphin. We had stumbled upon a pod of Porpoise, we spent the next few minutes watching them come in from all around the boat to ride the bow. It was amazing watching them play with us some 30 miles off shore. I have never witnessed this many at one time.

We continued on trolling, hunting and having a good time. Then it happened. We found a good flock of birds some 38 miles out. It was a nice school of schoolies under the birds. We put 21 more in the boat before they stopped eating what we offered. We caught them on light spinners with Bonita strips and jigs. After they stopped biting and moved on, we cleaned up the mess from the fast action and turned around to head back to shore. We trolled in for a while not finding any birds or floaters. Captain Dave decided we would run in and look for more stuff on the way in. We came across a couple more birds and picked up a couple more schoolies.

We were down to being 2 fish short of our limit for the day. We continued running and looking. Then we came across 2 more birds working. We slowed down and ran the outriggers back out and headed for the birds. Sure enough there was 2 more fish. Our 16 year old son Jeremy had not had a chance at a bigger fish so it was his turn. The fish ran and jumped a couple times then spit the bait, he missed the hook up. As I was clearing the other outrigger the fish made a move to that bait. As I dropped back to let him have the bait a second one showed up. The 1st fish took off with my bait and I was hooked up. This didn’t make the second fish very happy, it turned and picked up what remained of the 1st bait, Now Jeremy was hooked up to the second fish. We boated my fish while Jeremy was working on the other one. His ended up being the biggest of the trip.

As Captain Dave was putting Jeremy's fish in the box he noticed mine had stayed blue. I’ve only seen one picture of a blue Mahi and Captain Dave had never had one stay blue. So it was picture time. We had our limit so it was time to get back in.

Needless to say we all had a blast on our first Mahi trip. This will be the first of many more Mahi trips with Captain Dave. He has never failed to deliver on our fishing trips. I can’t wait to get back and go after some big Muttons that he always puts us on. If you're looking for a good captain give http://www.sweetenufcharters.com/ a try.

The finally haul.

I am new to the MIA area, transplanted from the chesapeake bay in Virginia. For work I drive over the bear cut inlet and cant help to think theres fish all over that bridge. I dont have a way to get on the water right now so all my fishing is done off land and/or wading into the water. Any help with a little local knowledge will go a long way...
