Windsplitter (Duane) and I have been trying to get together for awhile to share Chass spots. My jon has a bad trailer but as it so happens Duane goes and buys a nice Polar skiff with a 90 Yamaha and a jack plate. We took it out today for it's maiden run. It runs really skinny...took the short cut back in. I puckered up more than once. Really nice boat.

Ran to my trout spot and I put a decent trout in the boat. We both said nope...we want reds, so back it went. After a couple more fish that didn't make it into the boat we went hunting for reds.

To say Duane knows the area is an understatement. I thought I had a pretty good feel for fishing spots but he took it to another level.

The skies were clear as a bell and the sun was beating down but he had a few spots to try. First nice fish was a 21 inch red, then I got a 23 incher, we lost a couple more, Duane hooks a decent snook but it gets off at the boat. He hooks another and it gets off. He then hooked a touney winning red...right under the mark. I hook up on a snook, hoping for some sort of slam, but I didn't get it into the boat.

Water was a bit murky, fish were caught on topwater, spoons, soft jerk baits, no real pattern. Duane managed a nice sailcat on topwater and a decent mangrove. I hooked a jack. Nice day on the water and Duane is a great guy to fish with...thanks again Duane.

Launched at 9 and I had the flu or something aside from the severe back pain from fighting aj's and jewfish saturday. On the way out I spotted Carl towing a plane that's engine blew friday night. This might give away my top secret location but so be it.:rotflmao

Catching bait today was easier than saturday. We had about 50 baits in 30 minutes and headed out to 45 ft and put the plugs out. Within 5 minutes I had a gag on.

Made a couple drifts over the area and kept catching decent throw back gags. Then made the run out to 55 and dropped the plugs and was instantly weeded up. Crank the plugs back in and they are covered with green slime Move out to 60 ft and drop plugs and they are instantly fouled with slime. Swing back around over some bottom and drop down and catch a couple gags and one legal red with slime covering your baits after each drop. Decide to move out to 65ft out of desperation and picked up two more reds and more slime. The grouper bite was absolutely horrible so we headed in. On the way back in in 45ft I spotted a wake on the surface and pitched him a threadfin and BAM! cobia in the box. I even put the patented jimsfishobsession arm stretch on it:banana

Spotted two girls in an overturned kayak a couple hundred yards from the ramp. They tried to cross after the seabreeze picked up and their kayak rolled. Had to load them and all their gear up and take them to the dock.

Didn't get on the water until 8:45 and made the run out to sabiki up bait. Problem was there were no pinfish to sabiki up Spent two hours to scrounge up a couple dozen baits. Headed out exploring more than anything else starting in 50ft and putting out the trolling plugs. Withing 5 minutes I stumble over some decent bottom and the hot head xrap is hammered. Having not trolled for grouper for a while I back off the throttle and the fish runs in a rock. I circle around and let the line go slack for a minute and he came out. Turned out to be a 26" gag so we started drifting over the area. Dropping pins we picked up 4 legal reds and bunch of throw back gags. After the bite died due to lack of current I continued trolling out to 65ft along the way picked up 2 more keeper reds on a yozuri.

Headed back in early so we could hit the aj's. Most of which were undersized but after catching about 15 I did get one that was 30" that came home. Also had one get eaten by one of the resident jewfish on my jigging rod with 65# braid. I knew i was undergunned but I did manage to hang on for about 30 minutes. He was about twenty foot from the surface when he went on a final run. I had been palming the spool for the entire fight and by now it was too hot to touch. So he rocked me.

Took a much needed trip out on the gulf today. The plan was to fish with a limited schedule before work tonight. Got a late start with Mamacita being sick, and ended up getting on the water around 1030. The great patience and diligence of my crew lasted all of 40 minutes. By then, we had a squirrel fish, small trout, and some ladies. Only 3 out of 5 were still fishing at this time, so I decided to head to the island to eat lunch and hopefully snag a fish from shore. Brought the GoPro to take some spectacular shots of fish and water….and as usual, was too busy to stop and take spectacular shots of fish and water.

Ran out to the intake banks and loaded up the shore with lunch. After a quick bite, I proceeded to land record number of cats. Big ones, small ones, in-between ones, they were all there. Boo Boo – the world’s most talkative 9 year old with the attention span of a gnat – asked to use my M ‘dine to fish from shore. I never expected to see that beloved $8 lure again with all the rocks there, but surprisingly he not only kept it on the line, but caught a nice little under slot red from shore. He was stoked, then handed the rod back to me and went back to shell-searching. :shrug

Knowing I needed to get going, I urged the crew to abandon land and head to some nearby flats for the remainder of the day. We anchored up and after a few trash fishes, I landed two nice trout for the cooler. Mamacita finally got in on the action and brought in a nice Spaniard as well. The winds picked up, the t’storms were hanging on the coast, and work was unfortunately beckoning. We ran in around 1500 hours and stopped by DQ before heading home on wet roads.

No idea the water temp. Water seemed a lil’ dirty today. Winds were calm until the PM. I used live shrimp most the day. The DOA’s and ‘dines did not work for me – only Boo Boo had any luck there. Fished from the flats south of the CR channel to the coal canal islands. Had a good day. Great knowing your wife is the one who suggests a fishing trip with the family. She wants to go again soon, so hopefully we’ll have better luck next time. My trips are like the ugly girl everyone knows.....at least it has a great personality. I will post pics when I get a chance on Tuesday. I had to run to work this afternoon, so no chance to take the cooler shot - so until then, this trip never happened. :rolleyes

Be safe - KAMB

Hey guys, new to this forum but not fishing/diving. Been fishing the big bend area since I was five, thirty short years ago. Mostly offshore for the last 15 years, some time commercial and a lot of spearfishing. I have an eight year old that loves fishing more than anyone I've ever seen so it's mostly fun fishing these days.

Now that we know each other I'll give you a fishing report.

Seas= Flat
Water temp= perfect go now! Vis was also top to bottom if your a diver.
Depth= 50' to 60'
Bait= live pins & frozen

Got a late start and hit White city cause a few people on board had never caught an AJ, Made a few drifts and checked that off there list, all shorts but fun. Ran a few miles and seen some red grouper bottom, first stop we killed ten big red grouper and two kings. Cruised around for a few and found another spot. We finshed off our four person grouper limit and picked up two more kings.

My eight year old Clayton AKA "Big Nibbles" had a real good day boating his first two kings and a few of the largest reds. We jumped over to cool off and he kicked the prop (motor was off) and gashed his foot open. Some "at sea" first aid and nine stitches later and think he'll make it. Gonna make for a high $$$ trip.

I'll try to post a pic or two.

My friend Nancy called me and asked if we could put her son Eric on some grouper before he head off to the military. Well if this guy is heading off to serve our country there has to be time. i asked Doc if he wanted to take his Grady out to make it a sure thing. Today turned out to be one of those days to run just about anywhere. I picked an area that seems to produce often and we agreed to work it until it produced. Eric's S/O Chelsea was able to come along on her first grouper trip. The only negative was a solunar that said stay home...NO WAY! We started out with a very slow bite but moved around then drifted to find a few hungry fish. The gags were a bit smaller and to start the reds were short but then Nancy's rod was doubled over....big gag NO big nurse! She wanted to get it boatside with a lil help from her son and it was a couple hundred pounds of swimming dead weight. We moved away and instantly Chelsea hooked another. She took a good bit of funning but won a buck for bringing it to the boat by herself. Eric then hooked another nurse and had it to the boat quickly showing his Mom and Chelsea how it's done....Doc and I usually just instantly cut the line:grin. Moved around and drifted another area and we found what we came for with a decent bite that lasted a couple hours producing a half dozen good red grouper and several gags. The bite was on and off all day with the fish wanting something slightly different each bite. 50' was the as far as we had to go today for some sore arms. Lots of moves lots of different types of cut bait and jigs kept them interested. A flat day showed lots of bonita and lots of bait out there right now. A great day in the blue with good friends! thanks again Doc!

She had to see what it was for herself
(Thank you troutman and key pond) fiund multiple spots from 45-50 ft with live bottom and hungry fish. Reds and Gags bit best on pinfish, lots of grunts on squid. Ramoras were as thick as I've ever seen but didn't see a cobia on any of our stops all day. Ended up catching 8 keeper reds and a mess of key west grunts. Did see a lot of bait, ballyhoo, thread fins and even some flying fish.

Well as said it was nice just to get out on the water after
a couple weeks training pole climbers in south Florida
for at&t.
We had a window Saturday morning so another instructor
and long time friend from North Dakota and I
made a run from the south to the Bend for some
shallow water fishing. We hit the ramp at just after 6:30 am
and I finely new why I have been spoiled by fishing weekdays,
and staying away on the weekends!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With that being said
we were out front Homosassa around 7:45 and in search of a bite
There was no shortage of boats and people and it makes it tough
fishing the skinny stuff with people constantly running by checking You
out? The fish were there but very spooky and most times would fail
to engage even though You put the plug where it needed to be?
We did manage a nice red and 7 big trout for our efforts with the red
a hair under 27 inches, trout of 24 & 23 and five more 18 to 20
Weekends are tough but You can still put some fish in the box
if You forget the interruptions and just keep fishing. Just a few more
weeks of teaching and I will get my weekdays back. Keep those reports
coming guy`s and Thanks for keeping me informed on some of Florida`s

Headed out into calm seas and beautiful weather about 9:00am. We started late because this was going to be primarily a dive trip but it turned out otherwise. When we got close to our first dive spot we decided to slow down and troll. I had thrown in a couple of trolling rigs as an after thought just before we left the dock. We had a double hookup right away, a couple of nice gags slammed the plugs. We ended up trolling for another hour with single and double hookups about every ten minutes. Tons-o-fun!

We dove some patch reefs from 25' to 33' and got two limits of hogs. Lots of cigar minnows and other bait are starting to show on the reefs. One spot had a dozen or more nice sized gags all bunched up under an overhang. They didn't seem to bothered as we approached them. At one point I could have got three with one shot. Frustrating but cool to look at. Spanish were busting bait everywhere all day. They must have been focused on smaller bait because none hit our plugs, even when we trolled right throught them.

Total for the day:

13 gag grouper
2 kings
10 hog fish (speared)
Countless lizardfish:fishing

Seas were 1 foot or less, water temp in +/- 30 fsw 77 degrees.

Our guide Spot

After taking Billy out for a Cobia trip he won't forget. I am sitting at the computer having coffee Sunday morning and I look over my shoulder and Mrs. Ruff One is standing there dressed in her fishing outfit. She looks at me and says " seas are down, wind is down, cobia are biting, get off your a--, get your stuff together and lets get out here!" She doesn't have to twist my arm much for me to respond. In thirty minutes we were at the ramp and rolling. No messing around on this trip. Headed off shore about 15 miles and setup on some real nice live bottom. I don't even have the chum bag out and Mrs. Ruff is hooked into a Cobia. I think her plan is to get even with me for leaving her at home Sat.

I start getting the chum out again and she's hooked into mackerel. I get to take three off before I give her the evil eye. She takes a break and I get to hook a fish.

She gives me the evil eye and I am back on the chum churn again. Now she bringing in these guys.

She is definitely getting even. I am starting to wear out. She gives me the look again--churn!!
We are in another good spot, because the cobia are showing up in good numbers. But, we're in this rut, all shorts with all the bigger fish eluding us. Finally Gail gets into one, it's a keeper!!

I love these spur of the moment trips, but to be honest, if Mrs. Ruff hadn't got even with me, I probably would had stayed home. Great day again on the Cobia waters.
Enjoy

Saturday we had a plan to get on the water a little early, throw some topwater, and then run out to Seahorse Reef to see what was out there. I bummed around and didn't meet up with Adam until a little later than planned which pretty much put us on the water at slack tide. We picked up a few small trout, Adam hooked a spanish mack that came off, some kind of jack maybe, and what I think was a sharpnose shark. We moved to a deep cut after that but the bottom was sandy and didn't produce anything. Then the boat wouldn't start, fortunately we had a buddy boat out with us, and some jumper cables. We ran back to the truck to pick up a spare battery. I threw the cast net for some finger mullet but didn't catch but a few, and one larger one which we'd later use for cut bait. After that we decided to try to run to Seahorse. It was very smooth inshore but as soon as we got out past that last island we started to get into these 2 or 3 foot rollers that were spaced about 15 feet apart which happened to be the length of the boat we were using so it was kind of annoying and slow going. We decided to "pick our days" and today was not the day for that run, so we turned around and headed back inshore. We drifted a grass flat again in 5 or so feet of water with sandy potholes and picked up a bunch of ladyfish and some under slot trout on jerkbaits and mirrodines. Then we headed to some sandbars that have produced for us in the past. Adam fished a cut with shrimp and stuff and picked up a small red. I didn't get anything at all with a jerkbait, a CT with a Gulp, and a topwater plug. We moved to another sandbar and I hook a really nice flounder on a paddletail, one of the biggest I've ever caught, but the hook pulled as I lifted it into the boat. Shoulda netted it. After that we called it a day. Didn't take any pics because there wasn't really anything worth taking pics of. The tide was slow and basically outgoing most of the day, without much of a real low tide. Maybe 1.5 feet of tide rising/falling. That's my excuse anyway.

Took Manny and Juan for a half day trip out of Crystal River. Light winds and fair seas greeted us at the ramp. We headed out in search of some of the trout that everyone has been catching lately. Manny ends up with a nice flounder.

A few casts later he gets trucked by an over slot redfish.

We all get into some really good trout action.

We caught about 20 trout before calling it quits. We left them biting at around 1pm. I want to thank Manny and Juan for being good stewards of the sea. We released all of the over slot trout to be caught another day.

BTW, here is the obligatory cooler shot…

I have been a stalker on this forum for a while because I haven't to been able to get my boat out and didn't have anything to post/report. Yesterday was the first chance I have had to hit the water. I started out bottom fishing but lost my anchor to the ocean bottom and decided to troll my way back in. I picked up the two grouper and the kingfish within 45 minutes.

Headed out of YT Marina 7:30ish with my cousin who hasn't been out in a while to try and stir up something. Headed north to some grass flats and found a fairly steady bite for a couple hours using shrimp and poping corks drifting over shallow grass. We kept 2 trout and a spanish, and released several shorts. Then the tide started going out so we went deeper and ancored with some chum but never got anything more then sharks, catfish, and little bluefish. I think I really need to get a better bottom machine and locate some decent bottom out there so I can get on some of those cobia that alot of you guys have been catching. We did however encounter a fine specimen of the opposite sex fishing totally nude amongst many other boats which was interesting, sorry didnt get any pics. And if that was anybody heres wife or gf, I appologize for starring so hard..

So I think everyone knows basically what all deck boats look like. All you have to know is they are not meant for "offshore" fishing trips, at all. We have really been wanting to get out past 40' to look for reds but after losing the gps coordinates in our old gps we were driving towards open water in hopes to find something or get lucky.:crossed Started off looking like we wouldn't make it by the waves that were off the end of the Crystal River channel, but we kept going. Hit 10 miles got smoother now cruising comfy at 35mph it's looking good :grin got 20 miles completely flat! Now standing and walking around to show how nice it was so we kept driving a ways till we hit 45ft. Really have no idea how to read the bottom on this Garmin I mean I can't even tell what is hard or soft out there, really need to spend more time with it. With the old Lawrence we had we looked for rocks and it showed good picture, this one dont see much for rocks at spots we used to see alot and it's more difficult to read the color line. So at this point we are all the way out there basically fishing without a gps or fish finder. Thought if we drift find the grunt or a grouper then anchor and should be in a good area, right? So quickly grunt, then gag, then 22" red then nothing...Drove back anchored and caught some small reds tossing back several at 19" and had one or two touch 20" but to close for comfort and threw them back. While we had ladyfish the big chunks were working well for both red and gags thanks to seeing how Doc uses them, ran out of them quickly then used sand perch heads and tails and old pinfish and cut grunt. Bite died didn't know where to go now, deeper or move around same depth, saw some boats few miles away and thought if they are that close to each other the whole area must have scattered good bottom. Didn't get close to them stayed half a mile away bottom really never changed if we were catching or not catching so gave up caring to look at the bottom. So we kept doing the same routine to find fish. Didn't catch much in 55ft just some more small ones. Went back to 46ft and got onto some decent size and quantity of reds the second it hit the bottom and mixed in were a few gags sharks and annoying remoras so we used them as bait so they would stop following our baits. Oh and we thought it would be funny to take pics with our spinning rods in the pictures to mess with Doc :grin The gags put up a great fight but it's the rod that does the work doesn't matter to me if I can't tighten the drag as much I can grab the reel if I have too. And there was bait and bonita everywhere in every depth but nothing would hit :shrug Anyways it was a fun day to get out there and finally catch some grouper with my dad and jake out of our very limited hurricane deck boat :grin
