ive had my battle 3000 for about a month now. i fish out of a kayak so my gear gets a little wet from time to time, but i always give my stuff a fresh water rinse. the other day my battle became real stiff to reel and sounded rough. it has never been submerged. i took the spool off and cleaned it up, i hesitate to take it apart cause i dont want to screw something up. also im not sure if that woukd affect the warranty. so do you guys hose your reels off or soak them in a bucket? also whats the difficulty in taking on apart. ive really liked the reel, just surprised that its acting up after all the good stuff ive heard about battles taking a beating! thanks

My btl5000 started making a strange sound on the retrieve this weekend. Every turn of the handle still seems ok and brings in line, but now it sounds like a bearing is loose somewhere inside. I took off the spool while at sea to investigate if anything had gotten under there (sand etc) but nothing found. What should I do to remedy this?

Hey guys,

Hey guys,

As the former moderator for the Southeast Section, I know there have been a lot of threads on Shimano, Penn, Avet, etc.. and how well they are built and what their customer service is like.

For the past 10 years, I have been a Shimano customer because my Penns (spinning and conventional reels) were not lasting, made in China, inferior quality etc.

I have read a lot on here about the new Penn Battle series reels and also about how the Penn service department is top notched. I was in the market to replace all of my spinning reels and read nothing but good things about the Penn Battle series.

I found the Penn Representative on the Florida Sportsman Forum and decided to contact him to ask questions about the Battle series and what the support was like since I haven't been with Penn for years. Tony Dubeck was a gentleman and he took the time to inform me that Penn stands behind all their products and that I wouldn't be sorry if I made the purchase.

While I was speaking to Tony, I also relayed the following:
I have a Penn 114H 6.0 reel which really looked bad. It was left on a boat and the years haven't been kind to it. I took the reel to a local tackle store (on another members recommendation) for an overhaul . I was quoted $20 to $25 for the service including a full strip down, lube and reassemble. This also included a deep cleaning on all the parts.

I was called 4 hours later telling me the reel was done (really quick turnaround) however the bill was $53. I was a little taken aback but went to pick up the reel and quite frankly.. it didn't look that great. There was still a lot of corrosion which wasn't cleaned up too well, the 2 side rings were previously split so they were replaced and the drag washers weren't touched. Lastly, the spool release kind of made a "grind" feeling while flipping it back and forth.

When Tony heard this, he asked me to send the reel back to Penn and let them have a look at it. I told Tony that I didn't want to put much more money in this reel and he said don't worry and send it to his attention. I did this and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!

Today, my reel came back looking like a BRAND NEW REEL! Penn replaced all 5 drag washers, both outside rings, some other washers and the reel seat.

The total bill for this work.. $0.00!!!!!!

Tony has made me a believer in Penn products and support once again. Shimano never treated me this way.. including rod warranty replacements and reel warranty service let alone an old reel being made to look new again.

I am attaching some pictures of the reel.

Guys, I don't have any pictures of reel before I sent it to Penn but trust me... even after the "overhaul", it didn't look anything like this.

I already purchased 2 Penn Battle 6000 reels and will be purchasing a couple of more real soon.

Thank you Tony Dubeck, Thank you Penn Fishing Products.

Cheers
