I threw my rod in truck thinking I'd make a few casts at the POI canal on my way to Marco. I get to POI and there is no water moving over the spillway and think "oh well I'll make a few casts anyway".......1st cast the rod doubles over and I land a nice 22 inch!!!!!

I have spoons, hard and soft plastics, live shrimp, and a castanet that I can throw for any bait that may be there. Any advice as to which areas are better? I did a search and didn't come up with much. (Only searched titles) any advice would be great.
It would be nice if someone could provide a list of when you should fish and for what fish and maybe what you can use; Or if you could tell me if there are fish you can catch in these summer months, mainly in the Cocoa, Satellite, and Playalinda areas?

Hi all,

Over the last 6 months or so I've gone from a very beginner fisherman to a pretty decent one and Ive gotten the hang of it so far but theres just one thing I struggle with. I can fish in lakes, off jettys, bridges, but I absolutely cant get the hang of surf fishing for the life of me.

I just got back a little while ago and got skunked at the beach (fished from 1-5pm). I bring my normal 2 rods (battle 3000 and a fierce 6000). I use the Fierce as the rod for the sand spike and rig it with a 2 hook pompano rig. My other rod I traded off rigs between a silver spoon and a berkley sand perch swim bait. I was fishing at south beach park with probably 100yds of empty beach on either side of me. As far as bait goes the guy at 7 Seas B&T recommended some silversides for the surf so I took his advice. I got out there and was completely unsuccessful and the morale was low.

Is there anything I should do differently for the surf? Rig types? Bait types? Dying to learn, so any tips you all have are really appreciated!

-N

The bite has been pretty good in the river lately. Had the opportunity to fish with Trey this past week and we found the mullet stacked up with big snook not far behind. Trey caught his personal best snook at 34 inches that evening. I've been checking out a lot of new spots to wade and am yet to have a spot disappoint me. Snook have been the primary fish for us. Though this weekend, Dad caught a stud 27 inch red only to get a picture from Chris saying he just sight casted a 28 inch red! I also caught a big flounder and a small black drum around some mangroves in less than 2 feet of water. Staying shallow has been the key to getting hits. Also had a first when I hooked into something that leaped out of the water, but didn't look like anything I normally see. After a good fight, I see that it is a small shark. Probably 2.5 feet long and pretty sure it was a lemon shark. Trout have been few and far between, but the ones you catch are worth it. None being under 24 inches this past week. The west winds this week should have the fish fired up! The majority of the fish were caught on the Unfair Lures Rip N Slash, Unfair Lures Mullet, or 12 Fathom Fat Sam Mullet.
