Took out a father and daughter fly fishing on Sunday. Despite the water being stirred up, they managed to catch a few snook between the both of them. In swelly/turbid conditions like we faced, it's best to use flies with a lot of presence and flash that will stand out best and reflect the most light in filthy water conditions. It's also important to change your typical casting technique you would use if the water was clear and calm. We chose to cover ground and kept moving as we dredged the shoreline with our flies. With the right sinking line in the waters that you are fishing your fly should be just above the bottom bumping it just a few times on each retrieve. To do this cast your fly out and allow enough wait time for it to sink to the bottom and then employ a strip-pause type of retrieve. This will allow your fly to slightly lift up off of the bottom and then drop again. This motion will get the attention of a snook that is at the same level of your fly.

A group of us are heading down to Choko this Friday and we are staying for 5 days. I just wanted to see how the bait situation is. We usually have to run offshore to the markers to find white bait. Has the white bait been seen in close at all? Any help on bait locations would be great.

Thanks,
So were idling down the canal and the kids talkin my ear off, wich I dont mind it happens alot because people are excited and jacked up about their day wich gets me goin then too. Well the youngsta is 8y/o and im chattin about fishing with this dude and what hes sayin is all just about right and wondering wheres he pickin it up from. I asked mom she says hes self taught, im guessin mags and TV cause I let him root around my tackle bag and he knew what everything was and what it would be used for. <a href="http://forums.floridasportsman.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=89038&d=1370821749" title="Name: uploadfromtaptalk1370821746542.jpg

The kid was dead set on throwin a doa cal. so im on the cooler using the remote bringin him around the shore line. Oh Snap!! Maaan Dominick can cast... Like a freekin pro. He was hittin every little hole I had my eye on. He brought his left hand up to feather and stop the line, it was amazing to see. And the kid talked some smack too. Unfortunately it wasnt a shore I catch fish on so I trolled to the spot just watchin him all relaxed shootin the shiz working the mangroves. once we hit the spot I had to catch some lil fish on shrimp to get him to throw a live shrimp. <a href="http://forums.floridasportsman.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=89039&d=1370822514" title="Name: uploadfromtaptalk1370822511952.jpg

So I turn around for a minute and I hear, I got it! I got it! Apparently Dom took his snapper and hooked up a shark with it and we landed it. Alota jumpin around First Shark! so we took off a lil after that and hit a redfish spot. <a href="http://forums.floridasportsman.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=89040&d=1370823152" title="Name: uploadfromtaptalk1370823148948.jpg

I filleted the fish, wich Dom wanted to throw back but mom said "i wana recoupe some of the cost of the trip" lol I guess he fishes the dock all day n night n all mom hears is fish fish fishing fishing fishing all day everyday. ya I knew a kid like that once.

Man! Today was a great day with some really great guys and great anglers so it was pretty much a day where I was able to do what im really hired to do wich is find fish and concentrate on putting people on fish and come up with a game plan to keep em on fish.
So the one dude was dyin to catch some redfish and another dude wanted to catch a shark and the third was like whatever you think cap. So I went into an open area where ive been catching trout just to see what im dealing with and 3 big trout landed and 3 lost some kinda fish later I liked what I saw so to the mangroves we went at the top of the incoming tide. About 20 yards in and the first red is in the net. The rest of the shore produced 2 more one being 26"<a href="http://forums.floridasportsman.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=88460&d=1370395936" title="Name: uploadfromtaptalk1370395930817.jpg

There we picked up 2 more big reds a big black drum and a huge freekin jack that really got us all fired up. <a href="http://forums.floridasportsman.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=88462&d=1370396227" title="Name: uploadfromtaptalk1370396225481.jpg

Plus at this spot people dont get bored by being close to a bar and playing with the red groupers, lane snapper, sheephead and mangos, macks n jacks. We hooked four and landed these 2. <a href="http://forums.floridasportsman.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=88463&d=1370396509" title="Name: uploadfromtaptalk1370396506223.jpg

Well lets just say they were looking for a way to stay out here after seeing how much fun fishing out here can be and cant wait to come back down. I recomended they go to the Marco Brewery to have them cook their fish for dinner and they insisted I join them. I mostly have been fishing in 10k but I was glad to get a few trips up north in my old stomping grounds in Matlacha and pi sound. We have been pulling in some REALLY BIG FISH! The sharks have been insane!! I love watching people bustin there azz on HUGE MAN EATING FISH. Its also alot of fun for me jockeying the boat. Ive been getting most of em waay back so its a total team effort to get these ball breakers in the boat. after catching these beasts for over 20 years im still fascinated by them. <a href="http://forums.floridasportsman.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=88085&d=1370232022" title="Name: uploadfromtaptalk1370232021324.jpg

Just got back from a four day excursion down to POI. I arrived early afternoon Wednesday and did a quick trip with the FIL to familiarize myself with his electronics. My BIL, who was my "guide", for the next two day arrived alter in the evening. Unfortunately he hasn't fished in over 6 years so it was the blind leading the blind for the next two days:grin

Thursday morning we set out nice and early around 7:40-8ish(did I mention he likes to sleep in) to our long idle down down the canal. Once in the bay we played leap frog from spot to spot catching some small snapper, snook, ladyfish, and jacks. It was a lot of action just nothing with any size. As we worked our way to the outside we finally struck gold and went 7 for 8 on redfish up 25". By this time we had several rain clouds around us and since it was "late" in the day...2ish or so we called it quits.

Friday we had another "early' start. We tried some different areas and had some moderate success but planned on going back to the "honey hole" when the tide got right again. At one of our stops I saw a huge redfish(40"+/-) and a 30"er paired up swimming along some mangrove roots. Neither of us we ready and before we could consider making a cast they blew up and hauled butt out of there. We got back to the redfish hole and I picked one slot up on a gulp. Next cast I pulled a small trout from a few trees up. At this point the weather is deteriorating but I have 3 out of 4 for a grand slam. We decided to head back since he has some things he has to take care of this afternoon. After dropping him off I start looking around for some of the resident poons that hang around the community. Three docks later I landed a 5lber and caught my first ever grand slam.

Saturday it was me, FIL, MIL, and better half. I knew the day was going to be mostly snapper fishing around the mangroves since that's what her Mom likes to do. Personally it's not my cup of tea, but I roll with the punches. Naturally we find a decent pod of big greenies and I wrap a net around 5 dozen or so. I was hoping that that would be enough to get her Dad to deviate from the mini snapper bonaza. But.....unfortunately looking for snook or something with shoulders isn't as fun as catching 8-12" mangroves:banghead

Today it was just the FIL and I. He wasn't feeling very well but we gave it a go and hoped for the best. We ended up getting a few small reds, small snook, one big sheepshead, and two small trout. There wasn't going to be any chasing poons today for another grand slam since I had a 3.5-4 hour drive ahead of me to get back to Fort Pierce.

Overall it was a decent trip. Almost all my fish came off of weedless rigged gulp jerk shad in either pearl white or chartreuse pepper neon glow. Chatted with Joe Snook a few times while he was either coming or going.

Edit: The only picture I took worth sharing is this blue tail.

Took a father and son out for two half day trips this past Sunday and Monday. On Sunday we left POI in my small boat around 1000 or so. Fished mostly south of round key and concentrated my efforts on the front shorelines and one bay back. Live shrimp was the bait of choice on a 2/0 circle hooks, also on a popping cork with a jig head. Using both methods we got some decent trout, redfish, snook, snapper and flounder off the bars, flats and dead stands of timber.

Took them back to the dock, got their fish filleted out and then got them settled into our rental house in Everglades City.

The following morning while reflecting on the real meaning of Memorial Day, and what the true cost of freedom looks like.

There are two guys I miss every day who knew that price. I decided to swap boats and take the larger boat so Joe and his son would be more comfortable. We fished all over and man it was rough and windy. I managed a few snapper, a single snook, a few trout , some bigger jacks and one nice tarpon explosion (but no follow thru) on a live crab. It poured the rain, lightning and thundered and blew the wind out of the east all day. Gave it up about 1600. Again live shrimp, live crabs and cut ladyfish made up our baits, with the same rigs being the tackle. Got them to the dock, shook hands and they were on their way home while I got on the trailer.

It was good to see Joe Snook at the dock for a few minutes and swap some lies, then we were on our way home. My first mate/wife decided on the way that cinnabons and lemonade were critical for her survival with her "low sugar" , so a quick stop and she was happy.

Got my gear cleaned and put away, then sat again and reflected on Memorial Day, my buddies and how blessed we all are to not only live in the greatest nation the world will ever know, but that we live here with some of the greatest fishing, nature, and wilderness in this great nation. Talk about the icing on the cake. Take a moment next time your out to look and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Everglades. Sometimes we all get so caught up in being successful fisherman we forget to appreciate the "little things" that make it so special.

Decided to take the boat down for a day trip on Saturday to do some fishing. Left the house at 5 got down to Outdoor resorts by 7:30 and headed out while it was dead low. Tried to find bait around the markers but the brisk eastern wind made it hard to net anything especially when im a very average at best castnetter, and outside of the Park Markers Chokoloskee has to be one of the hardest places to spot baitfish. After fooling around with that we stuck to artificial and headed south to the Lostmans area. The eastern wind made the water real clear and was one of the few times i could actually see grass flats driving a boat down there. Decided to stop at one to try it out and preceded to catch 50+ trout in about 2 hours. They were everywhere, we were literally hooking one every cast on Berkley gulp ripple mullet. They were hitting it right when it hit the water on about 25% of the casts and almost 1/3 were slot fish.

After getting bored with them we finally made it down to Lostmans and i stopped at a shoreline to try for snook. While my buddy and dad decided to trow fancier lures i decided to stick to my ole faithful No. 3 reflecto spook and proceeded to catch 2 nice slot sized snook before convincing them to put one on. Best lure ever made period. I remember as a little kid it was the only lure my granddad would throw and as far as im concerned its been, and still is, the best snook lure since the 1930s. After my buddy put one on, he hooked up to a giant, most likely a 40+ incher but it sawed through the leader. After I picked up a just under the slot sized snook, the tide started to fall and we headed back to clean all the trout and head home.

Went out from POI this Sunday with the plan to run wrecks. Shrimp are hard to find in the Everglades area found a couple dozen at POI marina. I was advised that the shripm are slim pickings right now so get to the bait shop early. I fished some wrecks from Pavilion South, picked up some snapper and caught plenty of non -targeted fish. There are a good amount of sharks on the wrecks; I hooked up with a 6' Bull Shark to get broke off 30 minutes into it. Anything with shrimp worked good for the snapper and mullet and ladyfish was awesome for the sharks. Oh yea, if anyone has a Blue Trophy with a Verado hanging off the back, how was the Pavilion wreck; looked like you had it covered. Tight lines.

May is generally a mild month as the winter winds are finished, and the summer storms have not yet begun. Because of this, you can travel further distances, and work different wrecks and areas less fished by others. If you get out to the shallow wrecks, look for larger schools of Permit. They will happily feed on small live crabs, artificial crabs, and jigs. Cobia will be available on the same wrecks. Bring a few live finger mullet out to these guys for a little drag screemin’ fun!
The flats are alive with Speckled Trout this month. Drift grassy areas in the 3’-5’ depth range. Throw ¼ and 3/8 oz buck tail jigs tipped with a small piece of shrimp for some fast action. Also try all types of soft plastic jigs, spoons, & top water plugs. Trout will happily hit live baits like shrimp and Pilchards. Most of what you catch will be in the slot. When you find one, mark the spot and keep coming back and drifting past it, or just stake off and work the school.
The big “momma” Snook are beginning to show their faces. We will all be welcoming them with open arms and cheering them on to make LOTS of babies! If you are targeting Snook, please take extra care to not wear them out with light tackle, and to take an extra couple of minutes to assure a full revival when releasing them.
Redfish are around and will gladly accept live bait like Pilchards, Thread Herring, Shrimp, or Fiddler Crabs. Also be sure to try a GULP shrimp on a weighted jig head, or a gold spoon. Look for Reds around oyster bars, especially the last part of the incoming tide.
Take a kid fishing and target Mangrove snapper. They are plentiful around the mangrove roots and can be caught on live shrimp. Remember, keep a child busy catching a lot of small fish. Their day will be much more memorable catching 20 Snapper vs hunting for a couple of trophy fish all day!
