Mike claimed he was in dire need of a fishing fix and him and I have been trying to connect for a while. Today was the day and after a couple days of grouper I was ready for a relaxing day of easy fishing. Cobia....Yes cobia.....put out the chum bag drown a few pinnys and watch the ocean. We shoved off at 7:30 headed up to MacRaes for some fuel and pinfish. By 8:30 we were over the structure and chumming the water. A pinfish under a cork, one free lined weightless and one on the bottom. Before long Mike hooks up with a good one that found the rocks. Then Another that spit the bait. My rod went off and we got this one to the boat, a legal 35" cobe that had a twin with it. 2 smaller cobia were landed after that and 3 more that took us to the rocks. We saw 5 cobia on and were not sure about the rocked fish as they could have been gags. The tide out there slacked off so we headed inshore to see if the redfish would bite. We had a great tide but bright high skies. Mike (true to form) Hooks and landed the only red of the day on a spoon. he got the pleasure of watching it eat as it struck once and came unbuttoned then chased down the spoon and ate it again! A pleasant day on the water with a great guy and darn good fisherman.

I have a 2 stroke Yamaha OX66 Saltwater series that has a problem that 2 mechanics can't remedy. Perhaps someone out there had a similar issue?

The boat starts and runs fine. Once you get somewhere and the engine cools down, one of 2 things will happen: 1) It will not start, although cranks with no problem whatsoever. 2 and more common) The boat will start, run for 2 minutes or so, stall out and not start again for more than 10 seconds. This ONLY happens after calling off for a while. I have been towed 4 times with the same problem. My regular mechanics are stumped. The high pressure pumps, low pressure pumps, ball, filters, water seperator, fuel lines, etc, have all been changed. The computer shows no errors and all fittings and electrical connections have been checked or changed. With another adult on board, you can bypass the problem by gently pumping the ball like a heart. After a few minutes and on plane, it will hold on its own most of the time.

The regular mechanics sent the boat to a Yamaha warranty center. They said they could not find the problem. They checked the engine for vapor lock and updates and ruled that out as well. The same thing happened the next time out. The fuel injectors are serviced and clear, compression is perfect and the boat runs like a champ on the way out every time.

Has anyone ever heard of such a problem? Any ideas on what this could possible be?

Thank you all in advance.

watched them clean a Viking right next to us and another boat.. young tall kid and his brother I think .. I do not have their names but I am sure the marina knows them.. so if you get it salty and fishy and you'd rather go to the beach and the bar for a short 'holiday excursion'.. you can leave the cleaning to them.. :) all you need is a good medium deck brush, hose, two mitts, a deck shammy (they also clean up wine..) , a hand shammy.. and a bucket .. get two.. bring your hose with a good nozzle.. remember to ice down some beers for yourself for making a good call and a clean boat.. or just go salty.. after all it is just a holiday..

I had an rare opportunity to fish Dry Tortugas wth Capt Yuri as one charter group was looking for anglers and Capt Yuri asked me whether I could join the trip.
Fortunately I didn't have any major fishing trip planned and I didn't hesitate to take the offer.

One of the main purpose of this trip was to test new Black Hole Magic Eye models. Her is list of my tackle.

Rods and Reels

for grouper:

8' Black Hole Magic Eye 804B conentional rod with JM PE6 filled with 80 lb Jerry Brown
5'4" Black Hole Cape Cod Special 250g Jigging rod with JM PE10 filled with 130 lb Jerry Brown Hollow
5' Black Hole Cape Cod Special 450g Jigging rod with JM PE10 filled with 130 lb lb Jerry Brown Hollow

for mutton snapper:

6'3" Black Hole Magic Eye 632XXH jigging rod with JM PE2 reel filled with N.S. Hybrid PE3 line
5'7" Black Hole Magic Eye 571XXH jiggign rod with JM PE3 reel filled with 40 lb Jerry Brown hollow.

Jigs:

-Super Sardine jigs 200g and 250g
-JIGNPOP Flat Hammered Diamond jig 8 oz and 10 oz

I put aside small jigs like Black Hole Biter and Taifun jigs for mutton, but I forgot to bring them.

Another objective of the trip is to take videos to show how I jig for grouper, mutton or deep drop.
Everybody jigs differently, but I hope some get some idea from the videos.

-------------------

Slow Jigging Tecnhique

I observed that anglers who start jigging use fast cranking technique influenced by Japanese style jigging.
There are times when fast cranking is very effective. But, in my opinion, slow jigging is the way to go for bottom dwellers fishing like grouper.
Slow jigging is nothing but to bounce the bottom slowy imitating injured bait fish falling down.

My favorite jigs for grouper is 6 - 10 oz JIGNPOP Flat Hammered Diamond jigs, but I tested 200 g and 250g Super Sardine jigs this time. I don't know it was because grouper were very active on the trip and grouper loved Super Sardine jigs which other fishermen on the boat can testify.
I easily got two days limit of grouper on jigs on the trip.

I brought 250g and 450g Black Hole Cape Cod Special for jigging grouper. And I decided to test 250g rod first.
After the trip, I feel 250g is good enough even for grouper, even for black grouper.

One time, I hooked up a giant several hundreds lb goliath or warsaw grouper on 250g Super Sardine jig and fought about 15 minutes on 30 - 35 lb drag before leader line got broken when the monster charged very hard. I spooled with 130 lb Jerry Brown and 150 lb leader line in case of big black grouper, but still it was not good enough for monster goliath/warsaw grouper.
When the monster pulled the line, I felt heavy like I was fighting a giant bluefin.

grouper jigging with light tackle. Black Hole Magic Eye 571XXH/JM PE3 combo

Black Hole Magic Eye 632XXH/JM PE2 combo. I gave Biter jigs to Capt Yuri when I fsihed with him during Thanksgivings and he said the Biter jigs have been dynamite for mutton and grouper. I had only two Biter jigs and I could see after using them on the trip why he likes the jigs so much.

Super Sadine jigs were hot for grouper on this trip

Went out solo today with my dog got outside the stuart inlet and to the south in 28 feet of water the greenies were thick raining on the surface piles of them they usually show up this time of the year in the same place loaded up and headed east.Got to 90 feet of water soaked some baits and nothing slow trolled east got to 130 and turned off the engines and let the baits just hang behind the boat it was not long and both my rods went nuts the first fish to jump gray hounded and then nothing ended up throwing the hook the second fish was hooked good only problem was he hit my rod set up for kings 30 pound line and a 12 inch long #5 wire tied to the main line with no leader so if the sail tied himself up in the line it was game over so i set the drag lose and after a long fight i got him next to the boat cut him off and moved on . No weed lines to 180 feet that i saw east of our inlet and the west wind made for no good edges or rips all in all not much to fish glad the sails saved the day good thing i still got tuna and dolphin from a trip to the corner not to long ago. Its all about the adventure when you are fishing out of a 15 foot boat my friends take me to the corner on there boat where in 2 trips me and 2 friends got 12 blackfins from 15 to 30 pounds 11 mahi mahi 10 to 35 pounds a blue marlin come in on a bait but missed him no yellowfin yet but hopefully soon we will find them out there.

Title says it all. I rolled out this morning to get a little time on the water, since I have to work an evening shift today. I had visions of landing another Cobia after seeing my boy's slob from yesterday. Well, it didn't take long. I had a 25lb Cobia decide to hit my Yozuri deep diver after I got out past the second bar. Fought a short fight and had him yak side. Hit him with the gaff and he flips out doing the gator roll. In the process he slips off the gaff and bent out the treble on the lure and off he swam. I was livid. Cussing at no one for hours. Pulled up one trophy snapper on a spot, then moved to another pulling the only live bait I had, a big hardtail. Well somehow he wiggles off, so now I am stuck pulling nasty cigsicles I had. On the way to our famed Trigger hole I see some birds working the water pretty hard. I start heading that way when I notice an odd thump on the King rig. Bout to get even more upset cause I figured it was remora time. Pick up the pole and start to move a little more when I feel deadweight grab the bait. It felt substantial, so I did my Bass fisherman impression and set the hook as hard as I could. That's when **** hit the fan. 200 yds of line came off my spool in seconds. I could see smoke coming out of the reel. I start hauling *** towards the fish to try and catch up. The only time I have ever seen line move that fast was when I accidentally hooked flipper. 15 minutes I'm working this fish. I take some line and he hauls *** again. All this time I had no idea what it could be. There was no jumping and I couldn't see color till he came along side the yak. When I did finally see him, all I saw were stripes. Big stripes! I'm kinda upset that my main GoPro didn't start recording when I hit the button. But I did get footage from my front camera right when I landed him. You will get a chuckle out of my antics. I got a little overzealous in my celebrating. 36lbs and 54". I don't know if this year can get any better, but it's been a hell of a ride so far! Tight Lines!
If I used some coarse screws through the straps into the kayak, do you think it would work? I just don't know if that will be too much stress on the screws and tear up the kayak.

Well, eventually you get a not so good trip out, and Wed. was ours. We hit a good day for weather, with the seas being flat, sun hot as usual.

Our biggest problem and it turned out to bother us was the tide running one way and the wind blowing in the exact opposite way. Confusion for sure. We put a lot of chum in the water, with one of our blocks down in the water column 15ft. Never did get a good amount of bait fish. Usually we have been covered up in all kinds of cobia candy, but not today.
Did this most of day.

We did have four nice size legal cobia swim by, but they refused what ever we threw at them. I always have Mrs. Ruff catch us some bluerunners, and I put one out behind the boat. Of course a big cobe swims up , bats him around, and leisurely swims off. The day was getting longer and getting more frustrating. Finally a small cobe swims up and I pitch him an eel, and he falls for it. At least one cobe in the boat!

We did have some nice size Spade fish swim around the boat. By nice, I would say in the 5-8 lb. range. I tried to talk Mrs. Ruff into catching one but she wasn't interested. Question is, are they good to eat, they are sure big enough. Today the fish gave us a true "Attitude Adjustment", and send us home with our tail between our legs!!
Side Bar: Billy and his wife came over for some Spicy Deep Fried Cobia Nuggets and some Louisiana Jalapeno Hush Puppies and of course adult beverages. Enjoyable evening.

Enjoy.
