    America the Beautiful
    Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
    Melody by Samuel Ward

    O beautiful for spacious skies,
    For amber waves of grain,
    For purple mountain majesties
    Above the fruited plain!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
    From sea to shining sea!

    O beautiful for pilgrim feet
    Whose stern impassioned stress
    A thoroughfare of freedom beat
    Across the wilderness!
    America! America!
    God mend thine every flaw,
    Confirm thy soul in self-control,
    Thy liberty in law!

    O beautiful for heroes proved
    In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
    And mercy more than life!
    America! America!
    May God thy gold refine
    Till all success be nobleness
    And every gain divine!

    O beautiful for patriot dream
    That sees beyond the years
    Thine alabaster cities gleam
    Undimmed by human tears!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
    From sea to shining sea!

    O beautiful for halcyon skies,
    For amber waves of grain,
    For purple mountain majesties
    Above the enameled plain!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
    And music-hearted sea!

    O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
    Whose stem impassioned stress
    A thoroughfare for freedom beat
    Across the wilderness!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
    Till paths be wrought through
    wilds of thought
    By pilgrim foot and knee!

    O beautiful for glory-tale
    Of liberating strife
    When once and twice,
    for man's avail
    Men lavished precious life!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
    The banner of the free!

    O beautiful for patriot dream
    That sees beyond the years
    Thine alabaster cities gleam
    Undimmed by human tears!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
    Thy whiter jubilee!

As for the peace that we would preserve, I wonder who among us would like to approach the wife or mother whose husband or son has died in South Vietnam and ask them if they think this is a peace that should be maintained indefinitely. Do they mean peace, or do they mean we just want to be left in peace? There can be no real peace while one American is dying some place in the world for the rest of us. We're at war with the most dangerous enemy that has ever faced mankind in his long climb from the swamp to the stars, and it's been said if we lose that war, and in so doing lose this way of freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment that those who had the most to lose did the least to prevent its happening. Well I think it's time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the Founding Fathers.

Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, "We don't know how lucky we are." And the Cuban stopped and said, "How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to." And in that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here, there's no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.

Funny thread, but when folks ask where my wife is from, I say Jamaica, get the blank stare... uh, she's 100% chinese... still a blank stare, OK, my wife WAS a permanent resident for 20 years, bigger blank stare, UH, SHE"S an American Citizen (of USA).

You can be any color. If you want to be recongnized as an American it helps if you make an effort to speak the language of this country. English!!! communication is the key for people living together in a society. I have lost count of the number of Cubans for Miami that I have worked on over on this coast who have lived here for DECADES and REFUSE to speak ENGLISH! There is NO excuse for this!!! It's not like they just got off the boat 6 months ago. And some how they are getting Medicare!
HA you seem like a guy who's got his act together from what I can gather from your posts.
So HA if you could please convince your fellow cubans that if they want to be seen/respected as Americans they need to speak the language. keep your identity and be proud of it.
  • HialeahAnglerHialeahAngler Posts: 9,601 Officer
thank you sir. I know what you're saying, but it is hard for the older generation of those who came over to learn a new language; it really is. Their children speak fluent English, as will the generations after that. have you ever tried to learn a new language at 30 or 40 yrs old? it's not easy especially when working full time and supporting a family. this is the honest truth. they take classes at night at the high school and community colleges, but they will still for the most part never be fluent in English. that doesn't change how they feel about the US. they wish they can learn English. you have no idea.
