165 pound tarpon caught on a broken rod

Had a crazy one last night.  Some clients were down from Chicago and with all this Tropical Storm Alberto nonsense I really didn't think we were going to be able to get out.  We had a break in the rain but the wind was still an issue, so I made the call to get in the back country to get out of the wind.  Action was pretty slow with only a couple rollers and not much on the side scan, but the silence was shattered by the sound of the biggest tarpon of the year crushing a mullet behind the boat, followed by drag screaming, yelling, and utter chaos in the boat.  We all were blown away by the size of this fish during its first couple of jumps... it was clearly a beast of a tarpon.  So this thing apparently has been through this before, because he honestly tried to twist us around every darn crab trap out there.  I can't believe we didn't get broken off by one, but 15 minutes later we were clear of the traps... and then it happened.  I hear a snap, look up at my client who just about fell out of the boat, and the rod snapped!  A Hurricane Redbone 7' XH that I've caught probably close to a hundred tarpon on.  Well this isn't good.  So now we spend the remainder of the time with him trying to reel down on a fish that's not ready to come in, using sort of a bench press technique where he pulls the fish towards him, then reels up as he pushes his arms out.  30 minutes later the fish is close enough to grab so I went for it... she got loose, the broken rod touched the line, and the rest is history.

Another XH redbone bites the dust.  I know you've had good luck with them, but we've broken three of them on my boat, all on large tarpon.

Well done to still catch that sucker & thanks for sharing the video.

Looking at the video, I think that fish might be bigger than 165, and I must admit I'm a bit surprised you got her (in what appears to be) that far up the harbor at this point of the season.

Awesome story! Did the client really fall in the water? How did you keep fish on while rescuing client?

Thanks Mike... Honestly I thought it was pushing 200 the first few times it jumped.  I never got a tape on it but I'd rather estimate low than high so I figured 165 was a good guess... It was the biggest tarpon we've jumped in a couple years.  As you know, the camera usually makes it look smaller than it really is... and as usual this video just didn't do it justice.

As for the Redbone... this is my second one to break in the past two weeks.  I'm done with them.  I'm going back to the old tried and true Star rods.  Hand crafted and Stellar Lite for me from now on.

I'm also going to ditch my Boca 80's soon... the Spheros SW 8000's have held up better and have a better drag IMO.  Although not as strong of a drag as the Boca, the Spheros is smoother and they've held up well for me.

And yes... the VAST majority of the big girls are out in the gulf now... but there's always a couple stragglers up there for some reason... like they're lost or something lol.

Wow Keith - what an awesome tale that your client will be able to take home with them... an epic battle, with all the fish gods pulling for the tarpon!  Well done to keep the line tight and get it boatside.  Thats a beast for sure!

Thanks, I didn't see it in the sig via my phone.  Excellent.  I have a friend who has been wanting to hook up with a tarpon for 40 years.  Thanks again.

Wow, broke downlow too.  Didn't let you keep any guides....Nice work to your fisherman.  I had something similar happen several years ago.  The Penn 113H handle popped off while fighting a fish.  I took one off another reel and replaced it and we still got the fish...But it was fun...

In town until Sunday.  Hopefully we will get our chance at a few...

Guys I really do not have too much to share on today's tarpon fishing. Many decades ago I tarpon fished on a very regular basis. Most of my experience was under the Howard Franklin Bridge at night.
Somewhere down the line sharing became very important to me. I am a Florida native who has lived my entire 76 years in Tampa. Sharing is payback for the privilege of living a life-time in Paradise. Just returned from a very successful trip to the Florida Middle Grounds & beyond. Will share a full report in the West Central section entitled,
'A Huge Florida Catch.'  Here is a preview:
