Kelley Fishing Fleet - Reef Report. Feb '13

2/2/13
Made our way up north to two spots in 35' and 25'. Picked at the grovers, got about 15 of them. About 5 lanes. ONE legal yellowtail and a LOT of grunts. Had zero current and a swinging boat. Worth mentioning we got a 25" gag that went swimming.

Lots of lanes. About 45 of them. Couple grovers and a single yellowtail.

    2/4/13
Went out to 55' and the current was like a river. Stayed there for about an hour and picked out one grover and a couple grunts. Ended up coming into 30' and had a perfect north current. Brought in 20 tails to 16", 10 grovers to 2lb and some more grunts.

Went up north in 30' and caught about 35 yellowtail to 17", 15 grovers to 2lb, 10 lanes and a bunch of grunts. For every tail we kept we threw 5-10 back. If you're going to go fishing do it tomorrow, this weekend is going to be sporty.

are and pilchards showing up there on the reef at night? Or have you seen them on the grass flats in haulover yet?
  • CaptHeavyCaptHeavy Posts: 717 Officer
By the time I get out of the marina it's dark so I can't tell you about the grass flats. However there's been nights where they're pretty thick in the chumline. Last night however we had a bunch of ballyhoo behind the boat.

Picked at the tails, Got 20 or so in a 15 minute span. Rest of the evening was pretty uneventful. Couple grovers, couple happy groupers. Lanes and grunts.

    2/9/13
Miserable. Maybe 10 snapper and an equal amount of grunts.

    2/10/13
No customers. Would have been the same, if not worse, than yesterday.

    Wacane, no prob.

No current and a stout E/ESE wind had the boat swinging around like crazy. Tried two spots in 65' and 55'. Both spots produced about 10 legal tails and 2 barely legal muttons.

Worth noting that the day trips for the last couple days has been on fire with the kingfish. Here's a picture from a morning trip a couple of days ago.

TERRIBLE. Caught 4 keeper snapper and about 25 grunts for both days.

With that said, conditions were terrible. Sunday night was really cold with a variable wind coming from the West, then NW, then N, then NW, then W and so on. Zero current.

Similar story Monday, stout east wind blowing at 20kt+, rough seas and zero current. Boat was dancing around the anchor all night. I didn't wet a line either day.

Decent conditions. ESE wind and a decent north current. Still cold out there but managed 20 tails a decent grover and grunts.

Hard to tell, depends on the current. If it's a north we should do okay.

    2/23/13
S wind and light south current. Boat kept straight but the lines were going toward the front of the boat. Still did okay. Caught about 10 red groupers, all small and obviously all thrown back. About 20 big vermies came up, also thrown back. Ended the night with roughly 15 tails and 20 mangroves. Also some of the biggest grunts I've ever seen were caught tonight.

Sunday and Monday (23rd and 24th) were pretty good. Sunday we got about 30 groves, 25 tails and a 27" spanish mac. Monday was about the same, 25 groves and 20 tails. Lots of little baby tails lately, but we were fishing fairly shallow (30-35')

With that said Tuesday Captain Richie had a charter on the Lady Mitchell and they got 10 wahoo, 3 dolphin and 2 skipjkacks on a 3/4 day. I'll have pics up soon.

Also just got an email from the National Maritime Center saying they've completed processing my 100 ton application and it's cleared for issuance. Should be receiving the license itself within a week.

Captain Brett, has a nice ring to it.
