Redfish Mania!!!

My father-in-law came into town for a few days and I wanted to put him on some fish!!! We started the day by stopping by the shop to load up on croakers(one of the many benefits of owning a bait and tackle shop:wink). We then broke the inlet as the sun was cracking and made our way north looking for tarpon chasing the mullet schools. Made it about 5 miles before my passenger had had enough of the 3'-4' close period swell so we headed back to the inlet to see what was chewing.

First few drifts resulted in snags and not much else, but then we had a fish on.

It was one hard pulling jack and put a smile on my in-laws face so all was right in the world.

The next 6 or 7 drifts resulted in more of these great fighting fish, but then the reds started chewing. This was the next guest aboard

After that it was non-stop action for the next 3hrs with numerous double hookups. We were so busy catching that we didn't take a whole lot of pics, but here is one of the bigger guys of the day. He measured in at just over 47".

The total for the day was 36 reds from 34" to 47", several big jacks, and a few freight train break-offs. A really great day of fishing in the beautiful Sebastian Inlet. On a side note, it I put my father-in-law on his biggest fish ever and he fought it like a pro.

We used croakers rigged with 4/0 circle hooks, 40lb pink floro leader, and various split shot weights. We fished the incoming tide.

Awesome! I love when the inlet goes off like that.:hail
How are the tides looking for next week? Gonna fish Wednesday thru Saturday while camping at Long Point for the BASH. Hope to get a few snook also.

Looks like it's going to be an afternoon incoming tide which is always nice, and then a switch after dark. I'd start fishing about an hour after the tide turns and fish through the switch and the begining part of the outgoing(unless the inlet is calm then fish the thing all night). I had been going pretty good on the snook on the incoming but didn't put one in the boat yesterday. I think the moon has a lot to do with that.

Remember when reading tide charts for Sebastian to add abt 3hrs to any tide and you will get the real tides inside the inlet.

These fish should be here for quite a while. I'm sure that during the bash it will be going off. I've fished the inlet at least 2 times a week for the last month and it's been like this almost every day. The only thing is that they are def bait specific at the moment...they will take a pig, wont touch a pin, but will destroy a croaker within seconds. I've had the snook be a little picky before, but never had the reds like they are now.

Thanks everybody for all the awesome comments!:hail

I had a blast filming that thing. I got a little nervouse at the begining because it took us like 7 drifts to put a fish in the boat....I was worried I was going to get skunked in HD for everyone to see.:hairraiser

It ended up being a great day of fishing though...we put about 25 overslot reds in the boat, several overslot snook, a beauty of a slot snook(31 15/16"), some big stinkin jacks, and that grouper that should have come home for dinner!!:banghead:banghead Capt. George is a great guy and a lot of fun to fish with:fishing

Hey Final Point - I will be camping a night at SI State Park in 2 weeks. I won't have my boat with me, but am planning to fish from shore. Seems to me that Croakers are the ticket, but since I'll just be walking around, I was going to try bouncing some Gulps on a jig. I've never fished the area. You ever try this technique in the surf off the beach just south of the inlet? Thanks.

When I have used arti's to fish the inlet I usually use bucktail style jigs, or large lipped plugs like windcheaters or bomber long A's. I have put a Gulp! on a jig to fish for flounder, but have never targeted snook or reds using it.

Give me a call when you are in town. I'm on the water 4 times a week and if I have an opening I'll give you a shout. 772-584-1239
