Boca 5/19 Dolphin - Buddy's first fish.

On Saturday, Ria and I took her brother out fishing, along with three of her brother's friends from Ohio, one of whom had never fished in his life, let alone caught anything before. We broke the inlet around 8:45 to flat calm seas and a beautiful day. Ran out to around 550' where we found the second nice looking weedline. (Passed the first after not seeing much life and wanting to start the day deeper.) Once we got the lines in, a few flying fish made an appearance and had the newbies in absolute awe that fish could indeed actually fly. Their day was already made and we were 5 minutes into fishing. Less than five minutes after that, we pass over a big turtle (again drawing ooooohs and aaaahhhs from the crew), the port outrigger pops and we're on! Then goes the port flat. Ria grabs the port flat, but very quickly goes slack. Wahoo cut off, bye bye islander. But then, the first rod to go down shows the prize of a nice bull dolphin putting on an aerial show way off the stern. Don, the guy who had never caught a fish in his life, does a great job keeping tight and works the fish to the boat. A quick gaff shot and Don has caught his first fish, less than 10 minutes into his first day of fishing. Some introduction to the sport!!

He was absolutely pumped, as was the rest of the crew. He said he sent the picture to just about every contact in his phone. The predominant response from his Ohio friends was "Holy ****, what the hell is that?!?!"

We reset and worked the area for a bit before heading to deeper water. In about 750' we found an excellent color change and start to work a weedline south. A few minutes later we spot a large weed mat, but there's another boat working the line heading north and it looks like we will both arrive at the mat at the same time. I took the courteous route and swung way out from the line so he could make a good pass by the weed mat. Just as we passed one another and he gave a friendly wave of appreciation, we hook up another dolphin! Good karma! This time Jason gets on the rod and we get ourselves another keeper. He was stoked, but definitely took some good jabs from his buddy whose fish was quite a bit larger.

Not too long after that, the storms started filling in around us, so we made out way in by noon-ish to sit in Lake Boca for a few then cleaned the fish at the ramp (in pouring rain). As much as I love having my regular crew aboard, it's such a joy taking new people out and seeing the excitement and memories that offshore fishing can create.

Good job Chad, that is a very nice first Dolphin (or any fish for that matter). Any chance the islander was pink and blue on a mono rigged bally? Saw a post from yesterday that a fresh islander and partial bally was found when cleaning a decent size Hoo. The OP is willing to give the Islander back!
