American Shad

Almost went redfishing but last minute plan to switch it up due to the strong north wind. Launched on the St.Johns off of route 50. When we got there the Border Patrol was launching their airboats, those things are no joke! Once they cleared off we were on our way. Having never fished for shad before we didn't really know what to expect but finding the fish was easy. Any corner you could find fish rolling and jump just like juvi Tarpon. When you find the fish we would stop and start casting with a slow but steady retrieve. We were using very small jigs, spoons and rooster tails to get the bite. It was a fun day we caught multiple fish and have a couple of double headers. It's a super easy fishery and definitely worth doing. I think the best part of the day was just running the river and seeing all the alligators, birds, cows and horses. Gave a very old Florida feel and was an awesome day!

Here's a little video of the day:

How did you like the roe?
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.
