Nearshore Mango Trip

Now that ARS is closed, we decided to do some more nearshore fishing and also try out the new structure scan system. Found a nice little mango spot in 70ish FOW. The fish were pretty selective today. A few mangos were picked up on chicken rigs, but the majority of fish landed were caught on a 3/8 oz jig head tipped with live shrimp. We also caught a handful of nice lanes, grunts, porgies- and the prize of the day was a fat hogfish. Surprisingly, the hogfish was caught on a chicken rig and as soon as I got hit my son says, "wouldn't it be cool if we caught a hogfish". Wouldn't you know... hogfish it was.

Hopefully the storms clear out so I can get one more trip in before we head home. I hope everyone has a chance to get out. This stretch of calm seas has been incredible. Between the boat problems and horrible weather, we really haven't been able to fish much in 2014.

Great job on the mangos - did you chum them up to the surface? And for me, a hogfish is at the top of the eating list.

A little chum thrown off the back of the boat. No formal chum block or anything like that. Fish stayed at the bottom.

Solid trip! We went out sat night and managed only 21. Slow biting, but should slowly heat up on the weekend as the full moon approaches. New motors were hung and breaking them in this weekend!

Snapper great on the plate and fun on light to med. spin gear. On every trip I take out all I hear is grouper so I have to hit spots that have both. One day i will do a real snapper trip.
    Thanks for another report.

I smell fish fry! Did you catch all of those in the day time?

Yes. Left the dock at about 930am. This was our second spot. Due to the conflicting tide/wind it took a couple tries to get anchored correctly. Started fishing 11ish. Was surprised the bite was that solid midday.
