Big WMA 8

luv2kildeerluv2kildeer Posts: 127 Deckhand
Sunday I drove out to a WMA that I hunt a lot. I have been luck enough to
see a good amount of bucks this year on public land. I was trying to put my
hunting buddy on a buck so I let him hunt by spot. He saw some good deer
early in the season but wasn't having any luck lately. We met up at 3:00 am
and drove out to my spot. He grabbed his climber and followed the tacks to
my tree. I decided to walk across the dirt road and hunt about a 1/4 mile
in. I was really just hoping he would see something. 7:30 in the morning
some guy hunting from his truck drives down the road. I was thinking there
goes my chance at seeing anything. I text my buddy and he said nothing was
moving by him yet. I was about to reply that I wasn't seeing anything
either and I saw movement about 200 yards to my right. I looked and it was
a big buck moving quick. I mouth grunted to stop him. He froze and I
grabbed my grunt tube to try to get him within range. I grunted twice and
he started coming. He got inside 200 yards and I pulled the trigger. Oops.
I forgot to take the safety off. I tried to calm myself and lined up for a
shot again. He stopped broad side 180 yards out and I shot. I could see
that I hit him. He stumbled toward my direction about 20 yards and I shot
him a second time. Then he disappeared in the grass. I text my buddy while
I was still shaking. I stayed in the stand while he walked over and with
hand signals, I guided him to where I last saw him. My buddy almost tripped
over him. The pic is from where he fell.

    Nice!

Funny how quickly things can change. Way to keep your composure after forgetting about the safety.

Tiny file size makes it hard to see the buck. But it sounds like you had an awesome hunt. congratulations!

I was going to say 180 yards with a shotgun wow. Is that on the extreme range of the guns capacity??

Nice buck and a great shot. Feel bad for your bud. But at least he got some venison.

They say you can shoot over 200 yards but I don't think I'd try farther than that. I can hit bull's eyes at 100 though.

The slugs are hornady sst. It isn't legal to hunt from the truck or drive on a road until an hour after sunrise. People do though.

The first shot passed through but the second hit bone and stopped. Killed him though.

Fancy shooting, held high I bet. Where did the pass through hit?
Hunters are present yet relatively uncommon in Florida :wink

Awesome, that's what I am shooting. Extremely happy with their performance on game but have not shot beyond 75 yards with them in the field. I did shoot the bullseye out of my target at 100yards with both 870/rifled barrel and ML, SST's seem really accurate.

The first shot hit behind his last rib and passed through and snapped his back leg in half. It wasn't where I was aiming but it got the job done. The second hit the spine above his shoulder.

My boss has a slug gun set up that can kill deer at 200 yds all day long. He takes it to the midwest states where there are only black powder and shotgun seasons.

    Congrats again

A properly setup shotgun can easily be a 200yd gun (whether the shooter is a 200yd shooter is another story). The biggest problem is not necessarily the load being shot but the accuracy of the gun. There are a lot of things working against you based on the design since the original purpose of a shotgun was not to make it a .73 cal rifle. If you can get a decent trigger with a scope attached to the barrel you'll be on your way. Bottom line is you can't shoot 4" groups at 100 yards and think 200 is a possibility.
