View Full Version : Just fishin' -- for a little vindication

My 13 year old (Matt) sets his goals. An avid fisherman (comes from a long line of 'em), he's won fishing tourneys off-shore, and nailed quite a few inshore species. But believe it or not, the boy's never caught a red. A few months back a good friend took us fishing for reds in Mosquito Lagoon. His daughter boated a big one, but Matt just caught a few trout. A big red got off the line.

After months of drawing 'therapy pictures' about his lost red, this morning, on the Banana River near Patrick AFB, he landed his first red...a 40" log. And to boot, my daughter grabbed a nice fighting lady-fish. After a long, long season of work deadlines and full weekends, this was a great day with the kids. And they thought we were just fishin'.

Congrats to your son! Very nice red especially for his first; you may find him wanting to fish the inshore a little more often now. Good work putting your son on a red; priceless!

My Dughter's 1st red was a 40 incher too. Now working on Grandson's 1st red. Great work Dad. Way to go Matt. Love that Gator shirt on the young lady too.

That is awesome. Way too go for the young man to set goals and then achieve them. A 40 incher is one heck of a 1st Red. Like the other guys said, he will remember this and talk about it with you for the rest of his life. Very cool. What's next on the list??

Absolutely awesome! Congratulations all around!

Matt if you continue to set your goals and work towards them like you have here, you're going to be a very successful person. Keep up the good work bud.

Matt's next goal is a Cobia. I know they're offshore, but I've also been told there's an in-shore strategy. Any advice?

I've been on boats that routinely caught big redfish on large-sized chunks of cut mullet (too big for catfish to mess with), which is what we were using.
