Will be down in BG mid august. Wanted to try something different. Was thinking about hitting the cape haze reef or 1 of a couple near shore ones in the gulf between Stump pass and BGP. Can't find any reports on this forum or on the general web. Can you fish these like reefs in the keys? Chumming for mangroves etc. No secrets just general info would be appreciated.

We were down in late June/early July and fished the Cape Haze reef. We usually fish Danger Reef since it closer but someone was on it, so we went to Cape Haze Reef. We anchored over a part of the reef and put a chum bag out and then chummed with cut bait too. We caught grouper to 23", mangrove snapper, spanish, and jumped a tarpon. Tide seemed to be the key. Had to have moving water or the bite was off. We fished light carolina rigs on the bottom. There were tarpon rolling around us most of the day. We tried freelining a live bait, but it never got touched. We had to move a couple of times as the bite would die off after we caught several fish on one part of the wreck. Cape Haze Reef is more spread out than Danger. I've seen others slay the sheepshead on Danger but it's small and kinda rude to try and fish it if someone else is already there. Good luck.
