View Full Version : Best way from I-75 to Clearwater Beach?

Jennifer has a street painting gig on Clearwater Beach, starting Friday.

We will be cruising over through the greater Tampa world mid-morning on Friday.

What is the best way from I-75 to Clearwater Beach?

Both Toogle and MapQuest are confused, they want to send me about four different ways.

Thanks.

275 South, take Courtney Cambell Causeway exit accross the bay. It will turn into
Gulf to Bay on the other side which takes you straight to the beach.

In mapquest type in going from Tampa to Clearwater and it gives you this route. Once in clearwater just go over the bridge to the beach.

Craig, I'm guessing it's telling you 75 to 275 to whatever exit and then on to 19 north to 60 west into clearwater.
19 sucks but there's not a lot of options other then going farther north on 275 and getting off on ulmerton road and heading west.

I'm gonna pm you my cell and that way if you get hung up just give me a call and I'll walk you thru it, I've been here 30+ years and am better then a GPS:grin

Take a boat to cleatwater beach. It has to be faster than traveling by car!

I agree. Everytime I go to the greater Tampa world I am SOOOOOOO happy I do not live there. Traffic sucks. It reminds me of Atlanta.

To all:

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, "the" routes seems to be a) 275-19-60 or b) 275-causeway. Both look like they suck when you look at the drive times. Which route is more reliable for speed?

Avoid rush hour and it's not "too" bad.

I'd take 275 to Gandy Blvd Exit, west to US19, North on 19 to Highway 60.

On the rare occasions I'm up there, thats the route I take. So glad I don't live in Tampa anymore!

I claim that road with my last name. I also grew up in Clearwater/Ozona/Tampa.

Definitely option b. It's part of my daily commute. Trust me... you want no part of US19 right now (until 2015 when they complete the new overpasses).

Why not avoid Tampa altogether and take the Skyway from I75?

Terrible traffic is the reason I never leave South Tampa.

This only works if you are heading North on 275, but if that's the case, then do this.

You're joking, right?

275 to 60 to the Courtney Campbell would be best.

If you've got to take 275 across the Howard Franklin Bridge, take Ulmerton exit, right on Roosevelt, pass St. Pete/Clearwater airport, north across the Bayside Bridge to Gulf-to-Bay.

Why? Are you going to be in a hurry? Just slow down and take the scenic route.

If you like traffic jams and cars. :grin

WE, where will you be coming from on 75?

275 to Courtney Campbell, it turns into 60 and will dump you right into Clearwater Beach. I was just there a few nights ago.

If you have the chance - and the budget - a worthwhile detour one night would be to Bern's. Make sure you do the Dessert Room upstairs after dinner.

Yes, in a hurry to get there on Friday. Jennifer has to get chalkin'. Not so much on the way back, Sunday.

The two routes I am looking at are here - highway 70 in Okeechobee to Sarasota the up the beach.

Or, Turnkpike to highway 60 crossing I-75 into the god foresaken world known as the Greater Tampa.

Thoughts?

Sorry... didn't realize you were coming from the south. Here's your best route:

1. I-275 N over the Skyway
2. Take exit 30 for FL-686 W/Roosevelt Blvd
3. Follow signs for Florida 686 W/Roosevelt Boulevard/Largo/Clearwater and merge onto FL-686 W/Roosevelt Blvd N
4. Continue to follow signs for FL-686 for about 10 miles (road will become Ulmerton, then East Bay, then West Bay)
5. Continue onto Belleair Bluffs/S Belleair Causeway (it's the nice new bridge going over the ICW)
6. Turn right onto Gulf Blvd

About 3 more miles to the bridge to Clearwater Beach. If you want to stop at a much nicer (and much less crowded) beach before proceeding to hell, take the last left before the bridge into Sand Key County Park.

E Bay/W Bay is not Ulmerton Rd, they run parallel to each other. If he takes E Bay/W Bay he should turn onto Seminole Blvd/S Missouri Ave and go N (right) till he hits Court St (60) and go west (left). That will dump him into Clearwater Beach. Going out to Gulf Blvd is waaaaaayyyyyy out of his way and then will have to fight the traffic (one lane in each direction) on Gulf Blvd.

4. Continue to follow signs for FL-686 for about 10 miles (road will become Ulmerton, then Roosevelt again, then East Bay, then West Bay)

Just a thought but how far north of 75 are you starting out?
Might be worth 15-20 minute south drive to pick it up and go across the alley and do an almost all 75MPH drive.

There is no ideal way to get to the beach. 686 is no picnic, but it beats the hell out of US19 and Gulf-to-Bay (60). The 3-mile stretch on Gulf Blvd is a piece of cake, and much better than going through downtown Clearwater.

Besides... we wouldn't want WE or Jennifer to get converted to Scientology on their way to the beach.

I work the greater Tampa area as a road warrior so take it for what it is.

Coming from the south. I-275 over the SkyWay, Get off at Roosevelt to US19N. Take a left on Gulf To Bay all the way to the beach.

From North or East. Take I4/I-275 West, Exit at the Air Port towards The veterans Express way. Stay to the left and merge north on the Veterans. Get off at the Courtney Campbell and take that across the bay and it will turn into Gulf to Bay.

You can't miss the giant signs CLEAR WATER on the veterans. It's a Left Exit.

From Roosevelt take a right on 49th Street/McMullen Booth over the Bayside Bridge and you skip that section of US 19.

The signs are hard to miss to go to Clearwater, but you exit to the CC before the Veteran's Expressway starts and it's a right exit.

70 across the stae. Grab 75 N and follow others to 275/ skyway bridge.

Question-what is the weather supposed to be on the west coast?
Reason I ask is that they shut the bridge at a certain wind speed.

Mackeral Snatcher
10-24-2012, 05:31 PM
Sailflow says 19-22, so that means 25-30.
They shut the bridge down at 40.

Yes, really. I live just south of there and traveled those roads for 10 years going back and forth to work. Running out to the beach and then going up Gulf Blvd is a PITA. Gulf Blvd in that section is 30MPH and is strictly enforced, one lane only, lights, people turning, tourists and your traveling a greater distance. You can blink and be through downtown Clearwater though hitting a few Scientologists is always a possibility.

He could always pass Seminole Blvd and turn at Clearwater Largo Rd, then turn N and hit the cigar shop 3 blocks from 60, they have some good stogies. There's a Publix there too.

I always take the Turnpike north, then get off on 60.

Take 60 most of the way, but go north on County Line Road up to I-4 (to avoid all the crazy Brandon traffic), then I-4 all the way to where it merges into I-275 in downtown. Exit Veterans Expressway, take that to Gulf to Bay Blvd (60) and cross the bay.

About 3 hours from Stuart to downtown Tampa.
