I had a trip set for the last weekend of Red Snapper for two months. The week before the trip the group cancelled.:( I really wanted to fish the last weekend of Snapper so I made a few calls and got another group of fishermen ready to go. The forecast for the day was 5 to 10 mile per hour winds with two to three foot seas and a 60% chance of rain. Picked up some live bait and cleared the pass by 6 am. The seas were a little sporty and stayed that way all day. We ran off to about the 30 mile mark and made our first drop. We dodged thunderstorms all day but was worth the extra effort to be able to continue to fish the last Snapper of the short season. We fished live bait and dead bait and fish were biting both. By the end of the day we had a box of fish and seven bone tired fishermen.

We fished Sat
Yea, wasn't a great day to be on the water and had to work hard for the fish. :driver We saw a few 6's where we were not many thank goodness. :thumbsup It wasn't a good day to have any greenhorns on the boat.

We went out at 225 and probably around 8:00 am we were in solid 4s that were steep. While under way, almost to first spot and after pulling throttle all the way back we took one steem 6' plus wave over the bow. A solid wall of water over the bow and halfway up the cabin windows. Not quite dangerous, but certainly well past the fun stage.

Our are marked LOTS of fish. Between lightning dodging first thing int he morning at 30 statute miles, we only fished two spots for a total maybe 30 minutes combined before having a boat issue that sent me back to the dock. I'm sure that we could have done better had been able to stay out there because we were in a lot of fish. The few that we caught (while not real monsters) came very quick and we were not working very hard for them. I do believe it laid down a little bit as everything became more stable later in the day. 30 miles at 225 however in the early am appeared to have been the epicenter of atmospheric unrest in the early morning hours. By the time our boat issue sent us limping home it did look like it was starting to get a little better.

Wish we could have stayed and put some red grouper in the boat. I've been putting 5, 6, 7, 8 of them in the boat this summer fishing 10 miles from the pass this year. Was excited about getting offshore a little bit for some more numbers and bigger fish, but we just had some bad luck on Sat.

Oh well.

Next weekend we either go scalloping, or maybe make a long run and try some trolling. We'll see. Still have some boat issues to work through this week before we go trolling.

Nice catch. Glad to see my 2 older brothers got to out and fish the last weekend for snapper season. Might have been rough seas but you always put them in the boat no matter the weather.

After the beatin i took Saturday.... (fighting heavy seas, boat control, dodging thunderstorms, throwing back nice keeper gags and running with only one reverse due to broken cable) fishing Sunday wasn't a option for this old man. But we are looking forward to Aug 1st, AJ's here we come. btw mannawray your trip will be real big fish trip (AJ TRIP) COMING SOON GET READY.

Here is my take on the 2011 red snapper season.
Here is a short video from a AJ trip on 4-09-11, but red snapper and gag were so thick hard to get a bait passed them.

Fast forward to the last weekend of the red snapper season. Here is another pic from our trip and yes the red snapper are still thick in the gulf.

Looks like to me us (rec. guys) have made little to no impact on the red snapper population during the short season. Please use this data and give us a fall red snapper season.

Nice way to fill up the cooler of ARS and red grouper.:thumbsup I was a little disappointed in the lack of ARS reports with only a 48 days of fishing, nothing like the reports posted during the cobia run. IMO The best reports for quantity, quality and action pictures goes to stingwray. The best detailed reports goes to Panhandler80. bytheway i enjoyed all ARS reports guys thanks for sharing.

Report good, video good, food good.....thanks for sharing.

No doubt there is no shortage of ARS, and I would love to see a fall season too! Especially during Gag season!

I would be very happy to see a weekend only red snapper and gag grouper season for Sept,Oct and Nov. It would definitely help the Fl economy.

I got a call today from a good source we might get 4 or 5 days of red snapper during the gag grouper season. What does that mean Gray/Light Brown (gags), Red (red snapper, red grouper), Green/Yellow (dolphin) all on the same day sweet or something like this....
