The forecast for todays trip was 5 to 15 mile an hour winds with seas 2 to 3 foot. Had three hard-core fishermen on board for the trip. We cleared the pass at 6:30 am and were glad to be on our way. The forecast was right on as seas were 2 to 3's with some 4's mixed in for fun. The plan for the day was to run out about 45 miles. At the 30 mile mark decided to call it quits and start fishing. Used both dead, live bait and jigs and caught a mixed box of fish. Also vented and released AJ's and Gag Grouper due to current closures.:(

As always, nice catch. Are those white snapper? Whats the regs on them? Looks like what you had is what I call "confused seas". hard to get a rythm for confortable navigating in my boat for sure. Coming sown in the morning. I hope that "confused state" is gone by then.

Great catch and we have been catching and releasing alot of gags this year as well. Grouper is my favorite fish to eat so it pains me much to release them to the watery abyss.

Once again a very nice catch!

So what's your opinion with catching red snapper during the spawn?

I call them Porgies (Boat Captain's call call them white snapper sounds better) No regs on them. Food value fair IMO

I hate closed season on any fish, if the fish is consider overfished reduce p/p bag limits ( 1 gag,1 AJ, 1 red snapper 1 red grouper p/p). I don't like fishing offshore and releasing a 40lb gag grouper like i have done on the last few trips just to watch them die. As a big gag grouper caught in 180ft+ water has very little chance to live after release. JMO

FISHING TRIP 07/03/2011

Got a call from a friend of mine with an invitation to go fishing on Saturday. Unfortunately, I was unable to go on Saturday due to work. My friend graciously postponed his trip until Sunday so that I could ride along. For the first time in a while, I was not the captain of the boat. I got to drop a few lines, catch some fish, and enjoy sipping some cold adult beverages. Had a great time, thanks so much for the invite. This is the only pic i have from the trip.

I don't like releasing any fish that is good table fare. As I said in another post I had to release by biggest Gag and bigest AJ ever last trip. One thing I did like is that the captain on the boat I fish, when he sees a lot of small snapper coming up, he blows the horn and leaves quickly.

The seas did not lay for me. I got bounced around pretty good last week. Came into the canal Tuesday evening on top of a foamy wave that curled just in front of me. Really had to work the throttle to keep the boat straight.

Gonna have a neighborhood fish fry next month here so I gotta sacrifice and make anothe offshore trip to have enough fish. It's a dirty nasty job, but somebody around here has to do it.
