View Full Version : Great Action in Tampa on Fly 9/24

On Saturday 9/24, the second day of fall we had decided to make a quick trip out to see if we could find some fish to tangle with. The day started with getting up around 6am after a long night of tarpon fishing to replenish our supply of bugs for the bonito that had started to show up, or so I had heard. We got to the spot around 10:30, looked around and it was quiet. All the flags in sight were laying against the pole they were hangin from. All of the sudden we see a large head wake and then another and another. They slowly worked their way to the front of our boat. My buddy, Chris, made his cast and the lead fish crushed his fly. He was hooked into a large jack. After losnig a few, I tied on a topwater popper and enticed a ravenous bite from a school of competing fish. The jack was alot of fun and I was glad to catch one because I haven't seen them in schools quite so big in a while.

After that it got really slow for a couple hours and after some running around, some minor boat troubles and all but calling it a day we started to see the birds moving that we had been waiting on. The action from that point got hot. If you got your fly in the war zone you were hooking up. We ended up catching quite a few of the bonito we were looking for.

All in all it was a fun day. Also, this is unconfirmed, but I think we might have out fished the boats using live bait.
