The morning wasnt looking great. White caps as far as I could see, and a light drizzle. I decided to take my little girl for a walk on the beach and let her pick up some shells.

After about and hour on the beach, the Gulf slicked out, and I couldnt take it any more. I kissed my wife and little girl goodbye, went to the house, hitched the boat, and headed for St. Andrews Marina. About 11:30 I cleared the pass doing 35, and never slowed down for the 20 mile ride. We had 1-2 foot chop the whole day with around 5-10 winds.

First up were several short Gags and Red Grouper:

Always some Red Snappers:

A Triggerfish or two thrown in:

We caught a bunch of fish, but just 2 keeper Gags for the day and some Triggerfish.

Nice sunset on the ride in:

It was a great day on the water!

Very cool man! At least someone has been able to get out after the Gags! For some reason we are fishing for Kings this weekend? :)

Day two was another late start, but earlier than the first. With just myself and Jerry on board, we cleared the pass at 11:00. We were met by flat calm conditions. We headed South West for another 20 mile run to the live bottom. Four or five miles out, the seas picked up to 1 foot chop. There were a few storms and showers around, but we stayed between them. Sirius Sat. Weather comes in handy for this.

We decided to use only large live baits to cut out some of the smaller Snapper and Triggerfish. We dropped a chicken rig tipped with squid and started putting a few in the bait well.

I dropped one down, and got nailed on the first drop:

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc488/Beckcl/DSCF0124.jpg

Jerry kept fishing for bait, and I dropped again:

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc488/Beckcl/DSCF0126.jpg

and again:

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc488/Beckcl/DSCF0129.jpg

At this point, with three keepers in the bag, I told Jerry he better quit fooling with bait, and put a line down. He made a drop and right off, the rod went down and fish on. The rod bent hard and shattered into 3 pieces. I grabbed the reel while he held the mid section of broken rod, and we managed to winch the Gag off the bottom.

In short order, we had a limit of four keeper Gags so we decided to catch a few Triggerfish to go with them:

After another fantastic day on the water, I pointed the boat back toward the pass, hit plane, and settled in for the 40 minute ride in. Got home, washed the boat, cleaned fish, and called it a day!

Yeah, those Gags were perfect size for eating. They were all like clones.....26 to 30 inches and 16-20 lbs.

The Triggers were everywhere.....up 50 feet deep to the bottom. I make up some small chicken rigs with the smallest circles I had (2/0) which were too large, and a 3 0z weight. We were fishing with squid. If I had had some smaller hooks, we could have cleaned up.

Yeah, I found that spot during Snapper season. We had to move because we couldn't stop catching Gags. I am glad they were still there for Gag season. Odd thing is we pulled up a few keeper Red Grouper there during Snapper season, but couldn't find any during these trips.

I did jig up one small AJ out there.

Let us know how you do, it look like it will be an awesome weekend!

Thanks, what was your bait of choice for the gags.

They were not too picky!! The first day, all I had was some frozen cigar minnows and sardines, but we caught everything from Triggerfish to Red Snapper and Red Grouper, and lots of short stuff......not to mention we went through lots of baits. On the second day, I tied up a chicken rig and dropped some squid and caught some bigger live baits to weed through the small fish......we didn't catch any undersized fish on the live baits.

HaHa! Yeah, me too! That was last nights supper. We have been on the road all day heading home. It sure beats the food on the run today.

There were lots of fries and hushpuppies left, but not a shrimp or piece of Grouper to be found!

You go today?

Wow man! Forget the fish, I am glad you made it back safe.....thats the most important thing!

What happend? Did you get caught offguard, or did it move in that fast? How far out were you?

We skirted it on the way out. 24 miles to the SW Edge, ran inbetween squalls and made it to where we were going. One little cell blew over us from the West and all was good, then the sill one that passed by us on the way out changed from NE direction to exactly the opposite. It caught us 100 % off guard so we made the decision to head for home at 11:30. Wind howling, seas increasing by the second and raing cats and dogs. We headed into it and made it to the pass at 3:30. Cold, wet, whipped and worn. Chilled to the bone and warmed up while scrubbing the boat down. We were on the big Grouper bite but couldn't hold up at all when we left. Glad we did becuase the seas were breaking over the T top on a 24' Cape Horn. Exciting ride for sure.

Yeah, I just looked at ReefCast.....It looks like the wind is going to be rough the next few days with choppy seas.

There are quite a few public wrecks close to the pass. When I was down last week, the Hovercraft 4-5 miles out of the pass (I think they call it Lcat) was covered with Beeliners.

You might find a few Grouper on the public numbers as well, but I have not had much luck finding legal Gags on them. I would say your best bet is to head out to the live bottom. You can find some as close in as 3 or 4 miles out of Phillips Inlet, but most will be around the 100' line SW of the pass in Panama City. That means heading SW from the pass 20 miles or so.

Where are you coming down from? What type of boat are you bringing?

Beck
09-29-2011, 09:50 AM
You can get the coordinates off this Down Scan screen shot. You can see the school of Beeliners and a pod of smaller bait fish upper right.

Always glad to share a public number, I even told you what was there! :wink

I almost sent them, but then I remembered that you said you didnt like to run that far from Destin! You will just have to go with me I guess! :grin

Here is another shot of the Hovercraft. That first screen shot shows a rise of something coming off the deck. This one is of the end of the Hovercraft. If memory serves me, I think the whole thing is 110' long.

The Lowrance Structure Scan can show some pretty cool stuff!

Thanks! Yeah, the seasons are ridiculous. We have a 6 weeks ARS season and 8 week Gag season.....its crazy considering the number of fish out there.
